These type of polling numbers are quite common when one party is involved in a hotly debated campaign. Similar numbers were offered in 84, & 92. As we now know, both of those elections were landslides for the incumbent. Similar to what we will see in 04. Once Bush faces off against Kerry, we will see the Republican candidate's numbers skyrocket. Sorry to burst your bubble, buddy boy. 505 Americans killed. No WMD or Al Qaeda links. Try your "polling numbers" arguement on a soldier's mother / father / wife / husband / children. This is not about a hotly debated campaign, it is abour sending troops into harms way recklessly (US was unprepared) and needlessly (no imminent or even near term threat). |

How about this number: " There's no need for triggers if you have responsible budgeting, and this tax relief plan is responsible in a responsible budget. You know, there's $5.6 trillion in surplus, and that's a very conservative estimate." Andrew Card, Meet The Press Feb, 2001

Or this recent one -- the Medicare Drug bill was undersold as costing 400B, when it's 1/3 more on top of that. Hey -- were you surprised? Where was the intelligence on that one -- both in predicting the costs as well as people in this country actually supporting such theft? Dems say it's that high cuz it's a handout to corporations, and if they could eliminate that part of the bill they'd go on to spend even MORE. Damn the deficits, keep the entitlements coming. A pox on both Houses. How many died in the invasion and liberation of Europe? or just France, to narrow it down? Was it more than 500? Just curious. Maybe if we could pull a Dresden bombing campaign and kill vastly more Iraqis, things would have been as quiet as they were in Germany post WW2 and it's rebuilding. I'm also surprised that given how outraged members and families of our armed forces should be at Bush for misleading them, female enrollment at the scandal plagued Air Force Academy is up 14%. And they cited patriotism as one of the causes. Go tell those families they're stupid and their vote shouldn't count. Why would they support the monster in the Oval Office anyway? |

Dresden - good example of an operation that killed a lot of civilians but did not hasten V-E Day. |

It's complicated and has to do with regions and incomes. See today's NYT editorial about "giver" and "taker" states for instance. "Republicans seem to have become the new welfare party — their constituents live off tax dollars paid by people who vote Democratic. Of course, not all federal spending is wasteful. But Republicans are having their pork and eating it too. Voters in red states like Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are some of the country's fiercest critics of government, yet they're also among the biggest recipients of federal largess. Meanwhile, Democratic voters in the coastal blue states — the ones who are often portrayed as shiftless moochers — are left to carry the load."

The point of WW2 was if you innihilate significant numbers of civilians and troops you will quash any uprising should you invade and occupy. This last war wasn't conducted that way on purpose, and rightly so. That a small insurgency remains isn't surprising. |

Cjc, That statement about annihilating civilians is so German it is scary. The Germans practiced civil terror in both World Wars and it simply strengthened the resolve of the resistance. |

True enough. We killed hundreds of thousands during WW2 firebombing of Japan and Germany. Glad we didn't do that. |
