We have to replace three large wooden pillars that support the roof of our side patio. We want the same type of decorative look for them as they need to match the ones on the front of the garage nearby. Has anyone done this type of renovation or researched web sites, suppliers that stock or build older style pillars. Also we are thinking about adding a decorative railing to the porch. Has anyone had a railing built and installed. Recommendations for styes, contractors and building suppliers are desperately needed. |

Did you ever find someone to do this work? I need two wood railings rebuilt for my house. Thanks. |

Squeeks and Mazz: Bob Fanneron on Owen Drive (sorry I don't have his number) is an architectural millwork rep. I think he even specializes in columns. Give him a call - he may be able to help or recommend someone who can. Jim |

Mazz: I can't suggest a contractor, but I would suggest that when you find one you make sure that he is going to use quality materials, not pressure treated millwork from Home Depot. Someone we know casually had a whole new porch built. The told us that there are a number of millwork companies that manufacture quality reproduction items that can closely match most styles. They have catalogues and presumably websites. If you are a do it yourselfer Jaeger Lumber in Union is probably the place to go. They might also be able to suggest contractors who do this type of work. |

Pick up copy of Old House Journal to get a lot of suppliers of vintage repair gear. Or try the web site. |
