I'm also moving to town and have a few additional commuting questions. (I read the thread on downtown commuting--very interesting): 1) If you leave Maplewood at 7 AM to go into Penn Sta during the work week, can you expect to get a seat or do you usually have to stand? 2) At what point are all the parking spots near the Maplewood train station filled? Or is there enough parking for all? 3) Is it possible to park all day close to the Y? We think that's probably where our daughter will attend daycare. Thanks in advance. From what I've read, all of the people in this e-community are very responsive and helpful to newcomers. Dottie |

1. Expect to stand, although occasionally you'll get a seat. 2. There is usually ample parking at that hour, but by 8:00 you will be parking on the side streets near the station. These are permit-parking only, as well. 3. I don't know, but I'm sure others here do. |

I find that 7:15 train the best, quick and you get a seat. This is tough because the Y opens at 7:00. Our schedule is that we drop off our son at the Y at 7:25, park in the $3 lot at the Baker/Maplewood Ave site and get on the 7:43. Lately I have been getting a seat, even when you stand it is not that bad -- the trains (both 7:15 and 7:43 are non-stop to Penn Station). If you give yourself a little more time you can find a permit parking spot, it is just easier for us to suck it up and pay the $3. If you do choose the Y I hope you are pleased, our son has been very happy there (and so have we). |

Algebra2: I came over to Maplewood today and checked out the Y. I think we'll definitely be signing her up for their program. I really liked the director and it seemed like a very professional, sound environment. (The kids seemed to be having lots of fun!) How old is your son? Maybe they'll be in the same class. Our daughter will be 3 in July. Dottie |

Dottie - I've been taking the 7:12 out of South Orange for the last 2 years or so (7:09 from M'wood, I think), and there are always seats on that one. The next earlier train (6:48) often has seats, and the next later (7:40something) rarely has any. |

Relo -- my son will be 2 in June, he is in the Cub Room (I hope I am not revealing my "secret" identity). He's been at the Y since 3 months and has lots of fun. |

There are usually seats in the last cars on the train. The down side is the un-spoken reality of arrival at Penn Station. If you have never done it at rush hour, you are in for an un-pleasant surprise. The stairways up from the platform are jammed, and it could take an additional 10 minutes waiting in line to get out! The optimal situation is to find a seat near the train exits, so you can make a quick escape. Sometimes standing isn't so bad after all if it enables a quick exit. |

Curmudgeon: The 7:12 from South Orange does not stop in Maplewood. The 7:15 from Maplewood goes non-stop to Penn Station. The previous midtown train from Maplewood leaves at approx. 6:45am Someone second that if I'm correct, if not please let me know. |

You are correct on the 7:15. The train before that is 6:42. You can get schedules at http://www.njtransit.state.nj.us |
