I think this is an interesting article, but states the obvious, that parents need to be involved in their kids' education. Why the writer is puzzled as to how one does this is a little surprising. (After all, he did win a Pulitzer Prize...) Seems like he needs to do some research and find places (like here!) where parents are involved in many ways: from working in classrooms and the library (and being welcome there!),to tutoring, to staying on top of their kids' homework and projects, to participating in all the activities that the school's parent organization has to offer: our school's show and the spring fair come immediately to mind, but there are many events scattered throughout the school year. Chances are pretty darn good that if you are in a school community where parent participation is high, you'll have happier, more accomplished kids.
