Ex-officer: Bush file's details caused concern
By Dave Moniz and Jim Drinkard, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — As Texas Gov. George W. Bush prepared to run for president in the late 1990s, top-ranking Texas National Guard officers and Bush advisers discussed ways to limit the release of potentially embarrassing details from Bush's military records, a former senior officer of the Texas Guard said Wednesday.
...
Two forms in Bush's publicly released military files — his enlistment application and a background check — contain blacked-out entries in response to questions about arrests or convictions. Bush acknowledged in biographies published in 1999 that he was arrested twice before he enlisted in the Air National Guard: once for stealing a wreath and another time for rowdiness at a Yale-Princeton football game.

The nature of what was blacked out in Bush's records is important because certain legal problems, such as drug or alcohol violations, could have been a basis for denying an applicant entry into the Guard or pilot training. Admission to the Guard and to pilot school was highly competitive at that time, the height of the Vietnam War.

....

So, it seems the issue of "where was George" may not just be an issue of using the National Guard to avoid Vietnam, but it may also lead to another cover-up investigation. When will these politicians learn?

Poor George Snr. and Babs. I know they planned on raising a political dynasty but Jebs too goofy (that drug addled daughter doesn't help either), Neil's too busy chasing hookers and Dumbya may be,"Out in 4 just like his Paw". I think Bush's handlers should have remained mum on this Natl. Guard issue (as they have on many other things) because this,"Were gonna open the books and clear our boy", plan is turning into a Pandoras Box thats not going in the right direction.

From the family that brought, honor, responsibility and family values back to the American people. ROFLMAO.

Bill, Hillary and Chelsea with all their faults (Not sure I should include Chelsea in here),are starting to look like Ozzie and Harriet (onscreen only), next to this lot.

It's no secret that George Sr. hasn't exactly been a big fan of his son's tenure.
Last October, George Sr. handed one of his G.B. Presidential Library awards (considered very prestigious)to none other than Mass. diehard liberal Iraq war opposer Ted Kennedy.

A not-so-subtle statement to his son, with whom he's grown somewhat apart from.

Which is too bad- W.'s on his heels now, and the repubs are frustrated to have to be off-point spinning the Nat'l Guard issue.
They could use Dad.

I don't think Sr. is in on any damage control effort at this time.

Not even close. Where's the quote or the story on that? There's no split with Bush 1 and 2. Bush has been reaching out to Teddy with no results since he took office. To whit:

Movies of Kevin Costner's movie about the Cuban missile crisis with hot dogs and popcorn

Naming some prominent law enforcement building in DC after Robert Kennedy -- with Teddy on hand.

Letting Teddy write the Education Bill.

This Library award going to Teddy is right in line with the rest of that. Plus -- Bush Sr. was buds with "Rosty" Rostenkowski. Bush Sr. was a squish, had friends on The Left who never rewarded him and ripped him at the drop of the hat. In that sense, Bush 43 is continuing that stupid policy.

His dad wasn't involved in his first campaign in any significant way, and he won't in the second.

Have you checked out Maureen Dowd's column today? I usually don't care for her tone, but today's column is excellent. If W gets another four years, we ought to replace the motto on our coins "E Pluribus Unum" with "Do As I Say, Not As I Do".

cjc-
alot closer than you think.

Here's what I can find in a minute- columns, but this has been assumptive knowledge for even a 1/2 informed liberal like me, and I link these because they're different in tone.
( But it's not the kind of thing a Dad would normally do under the circumstances).

The first story backs up my contention about reaching out and dealing with the Kennedys despite being hammered repeatedly.

The second op-ed is wishful thinking. Do the Bush's disagree on things? Sure. But Bush stepping back out of pique to let his son twist in the wind if he could be of any help? A bridge too far.
