From Forbes.com It is difficult to compare personal wealth across historical periods, but below is our best estimate of the relative net worths of the richest five U.S. presidents. The rankings are based on our own calculations and extensive interviews with presidential historians. 1. George Washington Federalist 1789-1797 2. John F. Kennedy Democrat 1961-1963 ** John F. Kerry* Democrat NA 3. Andrew Jackson Democrat 1829-1837 4. Lyndon B. Johnson Democrat 1963-1969 5. Herbert Hoover Republican 1929-1933 Is this good or bad? |

Interestingly, as I recall George Washington also married a rich widow. |

I was surprised to see LBJ so high on your list. Where did all of LBJ's money come from? Wasn't he a school teacher in Texas prior to his becoming a career politician? Did the money come from Lady Bird's family? |

After he finished school, for a while he was a teacher. LBJ bought a radio station and, with a little help from his friends, and parlayed it into a regional media powerhouse. Caro covers it pretty thoroughly. Lyndon was an operator, no doubt about it. |
