This summer, why not have a Gay Pride festival? This would be a day for all of Maplewood to come out and enjoy the fun and sun. We could hold it on the East side of town. Why do we need to go to Manhattan? I know there are plenty of gay singles, gay families and gay friendly people in our town to support this event. Any ideas?? |

Cfa, I can't tell you I would help organize the event, but I would support it. |

Gay Pride Day.....? Now that's something we REALLY NEED. Hey, why not go all out and have Nude Volley Ball games on the front lawn of Town Hall. GIVE US A BREAK |

I think any type of "Pride" day would be fine in any of the parks in town, however, I must draw the line at naked volleyball on the township lawn!! |

With all this rain, naked mud sliding might be fun on Memorial field! |

I have to agree with Nilmiester. And you Goodolddays, are a pervert. Next thing you know, you`ll be trying to coax Toad and Eyespy into a "friendly" game of naked Twister. |

I think it's disgusting what Goodolddays is suggesting. Doesn't he know young people read this board? |

Did I remember somebody saying that Goodolddays doesn't even live in Maplewood? I'd love to organize this festival, but I don't have any experience doing something like that. I can tell you that I am a worker and will do whatever is necessary to get things done. I was thinking of maybe a BBQ in the park (Dehart is fine) with games, entertainment, fun for the kids, etc. I heard that there is a caterer that will cater BBQ's. They actually bring grills and stuff to wherever the BBQ is being held. Anyone willing to spearhead it? |

This is a great idea. I'm not sure that I have the time to organize this, but as someone who has experience in event planning, I would certainly be willing to help or 'mentor' someone who wants to be the organizer. It would involve things like securing permits for the park, selling tickets, etc. A good place to start would be canvasing families people think might be interested to get an idea of how many people we might expect. I would also set a pre-picnic ticket sale goal that, if not met, would require cancellation. Maybe start modestly- have BBQ & salads included in the ticket price, but bring your own drinks. Maybe an ice cream vendor ? Organized volleyball, kids games and a DJ ? These things are expensive. Would the town, Chamber of Commerce, etc., be willing to help underwrite the cost ? Are there organized gay family groups (I belong to a social one that doesn't really involve children) that could help with the entertainment ? Just some random thoughts.... Goodoldays- if this does not interest you, please do not attend. You may wish to refrain from negative comments, as I am sure you do not want to seem prejudiced against your (many, many) gay neighbors and fellow community members. |

Greenetree, what a helpful post! And thank you to Musicme as well. I will post to a local gay families group and try to help figure out how much interest there is. I am not volunteering to be the lead organizer but I would be willing to help out if it is done by committee or something. Bacata |

Bacata, Musicme, Cfa, Mlj (and any other truly interested sincere folks)- if we are all serious, let's take a poll of our contacts re: interest and report back via the bulletin board. Maybe there is someone out there who could be coaxed into being the chair of this committee. Does anyone know when the Montclair & ASbury Park festivals (or any others in the region) are ? I know NY is the weekend of 6/23-6/24, with the parade on Sunday. Maybe we should ask people what they think about a Sat. afternoon BBQ on 6/16 or 6/23? Would they feel that 6/23 competes with NYC too much ? I know many of my childless friends like to go into the City on the Sat. before the parade, but usually not until evening. We should also ask how much people would be willing to pay for a per/person ticket. Once we get an idea of interest, we can decide how to proceed. |

Will this be for Maplewoodians only? |

"Not necessarily" would be my vote, Ejt. I had been thinking "at least South Orange" but why not others as well? It would be more worthwhile for any vendors if we have a larger pool to draw from. Also, more ticket sales would mean the costs would be spread out better? Bacata |
