Vic: I just heard that the BSE voted down the special question. If true, could you elaborate on this? |

As explained before, by NJ law the school district submits its proposed budget and any special questions for additional funding to a Board of School Estimate instead of the voters. The BOSE is composed of 2 members from the school board, 3 South Orange Trustees and three Maplewood Committeepersons. At least four of the 6 town reps must vote for the budget and/or special question. According to the editor of the News-Record, at the Wednesday BOSE meeting, the $70+ million SO-M budget was approved, but the $550,000+ special question was rejected because all three Maplewood Committeepersons voted against it. The three were: Vic DeLuca, Ellen Davenport, and Burt Liebman. While having little in common with any of these three and do not pretend to know the reasons for their actions, I can only applaud them for this specific action. In comparison to the approval of the actual budget it was a little more than a symbolic step, but perhaps it will cause all of the Maplewood and South Orange politicos to begin seek redress for an educational funding debacle that was ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court more than 25 years ago. |

What was the South Orange Trustee's position? Did they vote it down as well? Which three are on the BSE? |
