Hi We recently moved to Maplewood and loving it. Our 12-year-old daughter has learning disabilities & will be starting 6th grade at Maplewood Middle this year. She's as sweet as can be but quite shy and I would love for her to make a friend or 2 before school starts. If anyone knows of a family in a similar situation please let me know. Thank you! |

Amy: Try to get to the pool if you can. Quite a few young people your daughter's age should be hanging out there. Also, check the community calendar on MOL and in the News Record for young people centered activities your daughter can participate in, thereby meeting some young people her age. This evening's summer concert should be a great place to start. Check the Art and Entertainment section of the board for location, time and description. |

Hi I love maplewood , I think it's agreat town to live but unfortunately for those of us who lived at the border of irvington specialy on elmwood ave our public servants don't care about us I mean no streets cleaning ,no police presence ,no overnight parking enforcement . Wehave been suffer far too long now we have a coalition and we are prepared to share our problems with our local newspaper and the star Ledger we are tired of been left behind because of our minority status |

Share your concerns on the Soapbox too. It will help you to spread the word about your issues and get somew input regarding possible approaches /solutions /viewpoints. You might also consider going to Memorial Park between 6 and 9 PM this evening and speaking with representatives of the police department who will be there meeting with the public. |

Welcome to MOL.... FWIW, Joan is right about the Soapbox, and you are wrong about your minority status. Dear Yvettemichel, First of all, if you really love Maplewood and you think it's a great town to live in, don't knock her diversity status. Our public servants and public officials don't play favorites. They do from time to time need help in identifying problem areas, but I'm sure they will respond to your concerns when asked. As for us folks who live at the border of Irvington, especially on Elmwood where I also live, we need to work a little harder sometimes. Everyday I pick up the trash not only in front of my house, but my neighbors on either side. It's good exercise, and God helps those who help themselves.... BTW, Maplewoody made a good suggestion. Try spell check or reading what U write B4 you post it. Good luck and best wishes. Art (304 Elmwood Avenue)

Maplewoody, That response seems a bit on the rude side and counter-productive. |

Hi! I am new to the neighborhood and looking for some to play tennis with. I am an advanced-beginner/intermediate. I would love to just practice for an hour or two and maybe play a set. If you would like to play, or know someone who would, please let me know. I am free from Tuesday through Friday all day - I am an early riser so 8am court times don't scare me! Thanks! PS - Any other ideas where I should post this? Thanks!

Hey, Robert here. My partner John and I have just moved to Maplewood (from Weehawken) with our two boys, Benjamin (5) and Jordan (3). We spent 2 years pondering a move, a year looking for a home, and over a year renovating. It's been a longish road, but we're loving it. Feel free to post and say hi back, |

Hi. Hi. I thought I just posted this but I don't see it, so if there's a dpouble posting, ignore this and forgive me. I'm Robert, and my partener John and I just moved to Maplewood (from Weehawken) with our two boys Benjamin (5) and Jordan (3). We spent two years pondering the move, a year looking for a home, and over a year renovating it, so it's been a longish road, but we're overjoyed to finally be here. The community pool is spectacular...the boys can't get enough of it. Feel free to post back and say hi. Hope to get to know lots of you. Robert |

Hi! My partner and I, and our two dogs, just moved to South Orange a little over a month ago. There's a lot we have to learn about the area. So I'll be checking out this web site. We are adopting a baby very soon. The baby's due date is in a few weeks, in fact. We have lined up a baby nurse for the first weeks, but will need a nanny soon. I wonder if anyone here has any tips on the general price range one might expect to pay in this area for live in (We'd also be curious about general price range for live out... but we've got room for a live-in nanny and would prefer that.) If anyone knows of a local resource, other than an agency, for such info, that would also be very much appreciated. If you have any suggestions/thoughts/answers - could you e-mail me at ascribe1@aol.com? Doug, Welcome to the area, and congratulations on your coming arrival! I'd take your general questions about nannies over to "Please Help" -- more readership overthere (as well as plenty of history on these topics if the search function is working). |

Susan - thanks for that suggestion. If I had read a little more of the previous postings I would have figured it out myself, eventually (!) Robert - my partner, Andrew & I are 'new' too, and just starting down the adoption road, hopefully, in a couple weeks. If you have time to correspond about your experience here in S.O. so far and compare notes, my e-mail (listed previously) is ascribe1@aol.com And to all the rest of the 'posters' - hi! and look forward to getting to know you! P.S. Sorry for making my first posting, yesterday, a 'help wanted'! The realization of how much we still have to do in the next few weeks before the baby is born finally hit us on the head last night!

Hi. My family and I are looking to move to Maplewood. We really like the community atmosphere. Our only concern is the unusually high taxes. Any insights as to why the taxes are so high? Are there any actions in the works to try to lower the taxes? Thanks, and hope to be your neighbor soon. |

Nancy: Welcome to MOL. Check out the recent consolidation/shared services threads in Mostly Maplewood, South Orange Specific and Soapbox for some answers to your question. Then go to Soapbox (which gets the most visitors of the three) and ask any further questions you may have once you have read these threads. |

Nancy, A couple of thoughts...first, we have no major commercial ratables in town. This is the downside of living in a town with no malls or big box stores. Second, to some extent, the high taxes may be compensated for by lower sales prices relative to other towns (at least this was true 10 years ago, when we compared cost of ownership to towns like Millburn and Summit). Obviously we try to find ways to control taxes in the two towns, but the lack of business ratables is a core ongoing problem. Best of luck |
