Already some very interesting thought pieces on his life and legacy--what a mysterious man at the end. Some left and center views of him, and what is next for Israel: http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/comment/0,10551,1681125,00.html http://www.forward.com/articles/7175 http://www.economist.com/World/africa/displayStory.cfm?story_id=5389586 The other piece to this story, beyond the leadership issues in Israel, is the leadership vaccuum in Palestine. If a Sharon-like leader could emerge from Hamas, he might have the weight to force a two state solution that is more in the Palestinian's favor than a Fatah leader could negotiate--whereas to this point, Sharon held all the cards, especially after catching the PLO flatfooted with regard to the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. Yes, I know, the thought of Israel negotiating with Hamas is far-fetched; so was the thought of Nixon going to China, Reagan to Reykjavik, and Sharon withdrawing from Gaza. One can hope, even if that hope is dim. It may be the only way out. |
