re tjohn's and bobk's postings above re cruelty to animals and PETA: I don't think any one of us has to worry about there being much animal content in most (if not all) of the hot dogs we eat. If there is animal content, it's probably the organic matter the animals were only too relieved to be rid. Just the same: Ya can beat yer boss and ya can beat yer employees, but ya can't beat a good dog with mounds of 'kraut and spicey mustard. |

I passed by Manny's Texas Weiners 7AM morning on the way to NYSC in Springfield, wondering if their drive thru is open so early... Tjohn,Elgato save the crap ok? I use to make hotdogs during the summers of my college years and know what it takes to make a good weiner. Hint: The are killing the animals anyways and using the prime cuts elsewhere. So you may as well put the scraps to use.... Besides they are good! |

Ugh! I've just come in from 2 1/2 hours of spring (!?) rake out and clean up and weeding!! to that visualization. I love hot dogs..just not the kind that should be dog FOOD. I think I'll give PaulSurovell's a try this summer. Judging by what's going on in my backyard, that just might be next month! |

An entire thread about hot dogs and only a minor mention of Sabretts (thanks Hank), And I thought I lived in an enlightened community. Maybe Jersey City wasn't so barbaric after all. Sabretts with kraut and mustard is the only, I repeat, only way to go!! |

Mr. Sbenois, as a former contestant on Jeopardy!, I know for a fact that my (and Wendy's) memories are just okey dokey. You however, couldn't remember the difference between a kugel and a cudgel. FDR was not a president during my lifetime (at least this one) and you, sir, are no FDR! If Anon would kindly do us the favor of knocking your legs out from under you, I am sure that Wendy and I could demonstrate that we are NOT that old and weak. |

Just curious Wendy: did he tell you that during his first term as President? Or was it, as I suspect, while he was still the Governor of NY, and he served as the commencement speaker at your Graduate School? And you're sure it was Franklin and not Teddy? |

Dearest Librarylady, How many times must I tell you that playing the home version of Jeopardy that you bought in Korvettes in the early seventies, does not make you a "contestant". None of us are impressed that you were able to scrounge up 79 cents waaaaay back then to purchase the game and then answer a series of questions about an era that you lived through. Of course you got the Sacco-Vanzetti questions right. We expected that. And yes, you nailed the whole section on World War I. But you lost me when you said you were going to ask Art Fleming to put you on the show "again" next week. |

Oh, man, I really liked that old "Jeopardy" home game. You got to pull the little "$100", "$200", etc. cards off the board, and read the "answers". The board was red plastic, so that you could read the clues on the sheet (they were cleverly hidden behind red ink, and only readable through the red plastic). We had to take turns being the "host", since all the "questions" were in the answer book. |

Order of my favorites: Toronto Hot Dog: Foot long, grilled on a Grilled Potato bun, best bought at street carts. Corn Dogs w/mustard: Don't know why, but just love them. Yankee Dogs, OUTSIDE the stadium: Must be from a Sabretti or Hebrew National cart outside, not inside the park. George cut back investment in quality hot dogs for the fans YEARS ago, and now they suck. Big difference. PS. The last $5 cracker jack I bought had 6 peanuts in it) Chicago Dog, at Wrigley Field: With ALL the workd...throw an entire salad on top...unbelievable. Please stop telling me whats inside of the hot dogs...I enjoy them too much, and there's not much left in the world that you can enjoy without people ruining it. |

The most poignant reference to me so far is the one to Korvette's, which brings back memories of when there was real competition among merchants. Like Lenny Bruce said "if I don't like it at Gimbels, 'Frig it man, I walk' and I can always go to Macy's." I think the Korvettes that I went to near the LIE in Queens had a no-frills formica luncheonette that served bland, no-name hotdogs that rotated in a glass oven all day. You could have them on a bun with French's mustard and relish. |

I really wish I could still have a stewart's hot dog and a root beer at a drive in. Where did they all go? I have to check out Syd's - never been there. I also like the windmill dogs in Bellmar. Should you find yourself there ask for them "split and on the fire". The short lived windmill is Summit was just not as good as the one down the shore. |

A long way for a good hot dog, and sorry, no roller-skating waitresses: Stewarts: Clinton: Take 78 west to Lamington exit. Go left at end of ramp (Rattlesnake Road I think) to south, about seven miles, to 22 west. You could also pick up route 22 west at Bridgewater Mall, which is on 287 South. Follow 22 past Lebanon, Hunterdon County. Watch on the left hand side, 22 east, for Stewart's. There's a u-turn cross-over right in front of it. Stewart's in Washington NJ: Go west on 78 to Clinton exit. Turn right onto 31 north. Follow about fifteen miles past Spruce Run State Park on your left, and up to Washington, NJ. (You will pass several towns and stop lights, but it's there.) Past the A & P on your left, then you are getting close. It's just before the grand burg of Washington, on your left. But it's not open til summer.

Notehead, I feel your pain and I hope the sugar helped. Normally, I relish a good exchange, but this could be a recipe for yet another split in the left, so I'll roll with the punch, because I really don't have a dog in this fight, anyway. Besides, if my wife finds out I'm writing about this stuff at 4:00 am, I'm dead meat. |

There's not much in Buttzville. Follow 46 all the way out, west, past Hackettstown. It's a looooong ride from Maplewood, and another side of the planet. Just keep ridin', and you'll get to a part of route 46 where there's a hill/ cliff on your right and a river on your left. Round a bend, before the turn-off for route 519, you'll see a big sign for Johnny's Hot Dog Stand. There's a picture of a mug of root beer, a mug of buttermilk (ugh!!) and of course, a hot dog and fries. It's small, but friendly. If you continue on, and turn right on 519, you'll get to Four Sisters' Winery. They have a few things to see, then up ahead is the town of Hope, with a few more things to see, then if you turn right at the intersection in Hope, and go up a bit to the second right turn after that, you'll go up onto Jenny Jump Mountain State Park. At the top, if you park and walk up the hill a bit, there's a great view of the Delaware Water Gap and beyond, and great hiking trails, where you can work off your big hot dog meal.
