The all-Republican panel from the House which investigated the reponse to Katrina appears not to have pulled many punches. They seem to have let Bush off the hook by saying that he wasn't given adequate counsel, which conflicts with many articles immediately after the storm. But they, appropriately, blasted the response of DHS and FEMA. Nagin, Blanco, Brown, and Chertoff all have bad decisions to answer for, and I'm glad to see that the panel didn't focus strictly on the Democrats.

Meanwhile, McClellan says that "the President appreciates [Chertoff's] strong leadership."

Riiight. You're doing a heckuva job, Mikey.

If you are in charge, I don't see how you can blame your subordinates for anything. One of you most critical responsibilities as President is to appoint capable people to various posts.

I recall reading how White House staff actually had to put a number of television news stories onto a DVD and force the president to sit down and watch it, so that he would get some idea of how serious things were and take some action.

Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that read, "The Buck Stops Here".

I don't think to many Presidents since that time have taken that approach.

I will forever remeber Guy's comment that Cheney now has a sign on his desk saying, "The Buckshot Stops Here."

It is on his chest, not his desk.
