Opening with a double-page bleed-to-the-edge photo of a smiling Jack Abramoff golfing with Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), the April issue of Vanity Fair (hitting next week) devotes nine pages to the disgraced lobbyist and his attempts to set the record straight. Paticularly on all those who have forsaken him:

President Bush, who claims not to remember meeting Abramoff - the lobbyist says Bush once joked with him, "What are you benching, big guy?"

RNC Chair Ken Mehlman, who said he didn't really know Abramoff - it turns out he had Sabbath dinner at Abramoff's house, did him political favors, and even offered to pay Abramoff's tab at Signatures, the lobbyist's restaurant.

Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT), who says Abramoff never influenced him - "Every appropriation we wanted [from Burns' committee] we got. Our staffs were as close as they could be. They practically used Signatures as their cafeteria."

Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose spokesman says Newt wouldn't have known Abramoff "if he fell across him" - "I have more pictures of [Newt] than I have of my wife."

Guy,

The Repubs have their drug dealer buddies to. Here's the text of a note from George Sr. to his friend, the drug dealer Don Aronow. Bush bought his boat named Fidelity.

"January 14, 1984

Dear Don,

Here are some pretty good shots which I hope will bring back some pretty good memories. I included one signed shot in your packet for [Aronow's pilot] Randy [Riggs]. Also am enclosing a set of picture [sic] for Willie not having his address or knowing how he spells Myers? Will you please give them to him and thank him for his part in our wonderful outing. He is quite a guy and I learned a lot from him on the way up to Miami from the Keys.

Again Don this day was one of the greatest of my life. I love boats, always have. But ever since knowing you that private side of my life has become ever more exciting and fulfilling. Incidentally, I didn't get to tell you but my reliable 28 footer Cigarette that is, still doing just fine...no trouble at all and the new last year engines.

All the best to you and all your exciting ventures. May all your boats bee [sic] number one and may the hosres [sic] be not far behind."

Well that sure was easy.

guy, not a fair comparison...rumsfeld is smiling and shaking hands and they are all probably still alive.

in your pic, they are all dead and fdr's body language is negative...crossed legs, they are both leaning away from each other and all are stern.

Oldstone if you come back in a few months only one guy in Dave's picture will be alive.

Sorry, Guy, but Rumsfeld appears to be in good health. (Unless he goes drinking and hunting with Cheney.)

BTW, the Stalin-FDR shot brings up an uncomfortable comparison (if thats what you were trying for).

FDR made an ally out of Russia and defeated Hitler (tough choice, maybe. But would you disagree?).

To compare: Rumsfeld makes ally out of Iraq and defeats Iran? Well.... Let's just say the democrat did a better job playing real world politics.

kendal, I don't think Guy meant to defend Hitler, though one could easily read it that way. I'm guessing he was alluding to the dirty reality of realpolitik.

bill, dave is spot on.

FDR allies with a brutal tyrannical dictator to oppose Hitler.

Rummy throws support to a brutal tyrannical dictator to oppose Islamic Fascist State.

Plus Saddam and Stalin have the same mustache.

Its funny, you metion Hitler and everyone keys in on that. Guy, I hope you know I would never suggest you defended Hitler. I wasn't going there at all.

My point is that real world politics in a dangerous game. You make tough decisions on who to ally yourself with for a purpose. FDR dealt with the demon he knew- Stalin- to defeat Hitler. He used the alliance effectively.

We supported Iraq as a hedge against Iraq, but never really formulated how to deal with either state in the long term. But if you are playing Risk for real, you know that a vacumn carried its own hazards. Removing Saddam is only good if it doesn't create a larger bad.

Thats where the analogy is probably even more apt: we spent 40 years in Europe and elsewhere to contain our ally after defeating Hitler. Does that suggest 40+ years in Iraq? If yes, is it worth it?
