Let's cut RL a little slack. His party is in shambles and his philosophy has been eroded beyond recognition. If all he has left is to throw jabs my way then I'll gladly accept them. I'm just glad Corzine won last year. I was worried about some of you going off the deep end. I think this minute victory let some of the steam out. RL, please continue.

Listen to the segment called Indefinite Article, with Michael Ratner, Vice President at the Center for Constitutional Rights, editor of Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush (Melville House, 2006) lays out articles to impeach the president.

Very good listening. I listened twice!

I feel a Steve Earle song coming on ...
The revolution starts now
When you rise above your fear
And tear the walls around you down
The revolution starts here
Where you work and where you play
Where you lay your money down
What you do and what you say
The revolution starts now

In your own backyard
In your own hometown
So what you doin’ standin’ around?
Just follow your heart
The revolution starts now
Of course, then it became a Chevy Truck song, and kind of lost its impact after that.

revolution doesn't have to mean grabbing torches and pitchforks and storming the capitol steps.

Let's continue the Beatles lyrics theme with the title of this thread:

"Spread the word, and you'll be free, spread the word, and be like me, spread the word I'm thinking of, have you heard the word is love. It's so fine, it's sunshine, it's the word love."

Great song. From "The Word" on Rubber Soul. Presaged the summer of love by a year and a half. Always ahead of their time.

SLK - whether you acknowledge it or not, speaking on a public message board is part of making change. In order to effect change communication is the first thing that has to be accomplished. People talk about the issues of the day and we can debate or we can agree about the things we like and dont like in our country. Many people will read these boards and they will come away with new ideas or with reinforced ideas.

Before there was the internet people stood on street corners and handed out flyers and had rallies and meetings to discuss what could be done to effect change. Since this is a discussion board it makes perfect sense for people to propose solutions, air out grievances and/or tell it like they see it.

As such I am going to tell it like I see it -
Your call for revolution is stupid. Your call for 'action' from people on the board is stupid. People are going to do what they have to do. At the tipping point, when this country has moved far enough to the right that our personal rights are truly being trampled and when personal injustices make for more then just inconveniences there will be a backlash. Right now we are at a point where revolt is not necessary. We are at a point where talk, speech, complaint, suggestion, ideas are shared and from these we gain strength and knowledge.

No one is going to tell you what they are doing SLK. When change happens it will take you by complete surprise.

No it won't. If your definition of a revolt is Democrats getting elected then I don't think anyone will be surprised and I doubt anything will change regardless of which party is in power. We will still argue over the same boring issues, the poor will continue to be poor, the rich will continue to be rich, and there will always be one side insisting the sky is falling and there will always be one side who see a bright future. Either way, no one will be suprised.

The Republicans held sway for most of the first 30 years of the 20th century, long enough for them to wreck the economy. During most of that time the progressives were raising objections and making noise, just like now, even though they were out of power. The backlash started with FDR and continued for nearly 50 years. If you compare life during Coolidge with life under Nixon, you wouldn't say that nothing changed. Get ready.

Southerner no one expects someone as wizened in politics as you to be surprised by anything. After all you still come here for to talk about the same boring issues.

With 20/20 hindsight - things that may have occured if the democrats had won in 2000 -

9/11 - might not have happened. Bin Laden was on the radar screen and democrats had experts in positions to advise. Richard Clarke was an important voice and the Aug 5th PDB would not have been ignored.

War in Iraq - definitely would not be in Iraq. The UN Sanctions would still be in place, inspections happening and Saddam Hussein still in power but without any threat to his neighbors.

NCLB - would never have been proposed or passed in the current context. If a similar bill was passed it would have been fully funded.

Office of Faith Based whatever - never would have added a huge beaurocracy to spread government funds to evangelicals spreading gospel in US prisons etc.

Oh yeah - no deficit
Pay/Go rules still in effect
Effective government oversight done by congress and where necessary special prosecutors

Torture - no way is it condoned as a means to get information
Brewster Jennings - still in operation to protect us from the threat of WMD, loose Russian nukes, etc

Rich still rich
Poor better off
Student loans still funded
More cops on the streets
No stupid medicare drug bill
Health care policy - might actually have an effective plan
Environment - protected far better

Just my opinion

Hoops, I think you nailed it. No way the democrats f*ck things up as badly as the republicans. And you can see it in the poll numbers...it's over for them starting this November. First we take back the House, and then put them away for good. It won't be hard, either, because the republican corruption and incompetence and lying has been completely exposed. Once again, the democrats are going to have to clean up the mess.

Unless of course the GOP rigs the machines again. The only way they can win is to cheat.

He's full of resentment of what he perceives as the "rich and overeducated" e.g. criticizing me for pointing out my education, accusing me of bragging, then pointing out his education....
It's a forlorn form of the old fragging, and it's about sixties' era blue collar, hard-hat, old fashioned stereotyping. He's an old time anti-intellectual who distrusts everyone who can spell.
It's what I think of as the Howard Beach syndrome, made up of the most virulent form of racism and ethnocentricity, because it's from the North, and never has met a challenge. It's totally unfettered by humility, or any experience of being tempered by reality.

Hell, he's Archie Bunker!!!

But unlike Archie Bunker, I think SLK is downright dangerous. I would never go to a social function where he is.

I used to think Straw would blow up when Bush-mania started to die down, as it would inevitably when everyone got wise to his buffoonery.
Now, I think it's slk who is "blowing up" all over the message board because his beloved Bushmobile, promising him the happy days of tax-free comfort, where he can pretend to be a rich man, is on the way out.

Hoops-that is your problem, you look at everything strictly via party lines. Just because you support every Democratic position out of party loyalty(?) doesn't mean everyone thinks this way. Rise above such simplistic thinking...
