I heard that it was just announced that Halliburton will purchase Dubai Ports World's US interests. |

I assume that any bid to manage the operations of six major US ports will have to submit to scrutiny of the bidder's suitability, experience, and proposed pricing structure. Without that, even DougW and I could probably bid to run the port operations.

Is Doug working on the following model: People who opposed the port deal ("you all") will actually be unhappy, because Halliburton profited by their doing so? Serious, not sure I'm getting it. |

This is probably not going to happen, but.... Norm Ornstein: Dubai Ports World Is Considering Selling U.S. Operations To Halliburton Today Dubai Ports World announced it would “transfer fully the U.S. operations…to a United States entity.” This evening on the PBS News Hour, AEI scholar Norm Ornstein said that DP World was considering selling its U.S. operations to Halliburton: If this is done now through the backdoor, where D.P. [Dubai Ports World] has any role at all, Congress is going to go ballistic, and it’s going to be a disaster, I think, for the administration. They have got a dilemma now, because there simply aren’t American companies that have the know-how and the breadth to do this. Interestingly, and perhaps ironically, what I had heard earlier in the day, as they were looking at those that have the — the kind of resources, Halliburton was a name that came up. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/transportation/jan-june06/hls-ports_3-9.html |

Hey, now that everyone made noise and got their sound bite on TV, can we get those same pols of both parties to commit to making the ports safer? Because, although the whole issue was a no brainer grandstanding issue for nearly everyone we still aren't securing the ports. Or the chemical plants. Or the nuclear power plants. |
