Does anyone have any views about the riots in Paris? Do you think this will be a repeat of 1968, where strikes started there, then spread to US during the summer?

No. Different issues. The French are rioting against economic reality. Next they will demonstrate against the tides and seasons. |

tjoohn, thanks for the lite-minded expose of what's going on in the republic. Didn't know you were so keyed in to the rumblings outside the Elysees palace. Next you'll be saying that they are rioting against the French national health care system, which has been evaluated by health care specialists, docs, and even economists as one of the best in the world. |

The issue is students' reaction to the CPE or First Job Contract, proposed by the government. You can google either expression to find out the gist. You'll find more content than in tjohn's facile retort. |

Rioting is part of the French political system. This is business as usual. And no, it won't be spreading here. Idiotic to think it would.

Innisowen, The rioting over health care will come when the government has to start to cut back on benefits because of costs. |

Innis, I took a little time to find out what the French students are whining about. I reach the same conclusion. They are whining about economic reality. The French have a choice - loosen labor protections or have their economy whither. |

They're rioting against the low unemployment figures somebody tried to pass off on this board a while back...lol! France suffers from the same immigration problems as the rest of Western Europe. There is no work for all these new people and they become an immediate drain on the system. |

Riots? Have been living here in Paris for several months and just this am noticed a group of mostly young adults heading to StGermain to join what you call a "riot" Delivered mail in East Orange during the real riots in '67 and there is no comparison. At that time Vailsburg was still very desireable but look it now! Eliminate some of the so-called entitlements and you could very well see a repeat of '67 only this time it will be a lot closer to home. delivered

There could be rioting here by illegal aliens at any time. All that is needed is for one cop in LA to lose his cool and make a mistake. A video of the event would speed things up. Cheers |

If the NY Times is to be trusted, the riots there include the middle class now. Well, not saying the middle class is really in on the violent part of things, but they're marching and angry. tjohn is right. It is about economic reality. The riots in the 60s ushered in a grand socialism, and today they think the answer to 10% unemployment and a bloated nanny-state is to continue what's sinking them. Reminds me of the looming Social Security disaster. |
