You may ask why care about Newark politics? Well, because Maplewood borders on Newark and the better Newark gets, the better Maplewood gets. In my opinion, Sharpe James is one of the most corrupt politicians in New Jersey. Newark needs change desperately. No more fat handouts to developers, no more $50M slush funds at James' disposal, no more million dollar deals with arena developers while schools deteriorate and poverty continues. Say yes to Booker. Send a donation, it may be the best money you ever spent as a citizen of Maplewood. |

This shouldn't be news to anyone. James' corruption has been common knowledge for a long time. He kept on winning elections because he had the unions in his pocket. (The City of Newark is the largest single employer in Newark). I've already heard a couple of the unions come out in support of Booker. |

I was really surprised by Street Fight. Given the choice before the film, I would definitely support Booker. And truth is, I would vote for him now. But I think the film showed why Sharpe James is popular and electable. If the film showed me anything, it is the mechanics of the old machine politics. The machines all gave something back. Obviously public sector jobs is one of those give backs if you live in Newark. James is charming and persuasive and conveys a sense that he has it all under control-- through whatever means he wants. He was absolutely more entertaining than Booker, who comes across as somewhat pious and clueless. Don't get me wrong, Booker would absolutely make a better mayor. James has created some real problems in his running of Newark and created some real pain for the people there. |

"It's New Jersey politics." Who would ever expect NJ politics to take place in NJ? |

No, but repeatedly reelecting a man who arguably has not lifted Newark as a whole out of what it is and who ran a race against another black candidate that was in part based upon race in this land of tolerance, not to mention the corruption people seem to think surrounds this man.....that's New Jersey. It's like they'd elect Torricelli again if they knew he could win despite his obvious shortcomings. It's another example of why New Jersey politics is the national joke that it is. |

Actually, Sharpe James is to Newark what Al D'Amato was to his district. Sleazy, but he always brought hom the bacon. |

SO-M citizens would support James over a republican, fearing that a republican Mayor of Newark might overturn Roe. |

SO-M citizens would support James over a republican, fearing that a republican Mayor of Newark might overturn Roe. The Mayor of South Orange, Bill Calabrese, is a Republican. The Mayor of Maplewood, Fred Profeta, was a Republican It's like they'd elect Torricelli again if they knew he could win despite his obvious shortcomings. ??????????????????????????????? If he got elected that would mean that he won. Do you mean that he would run again if he thought he could win? The Governor of Connecticut went to jail. The Governor of Ohio pleaded guilty to a crime, but I think he got Probation rather than jail. The Governor of California... The immediate past Governor of NJ was Dick Codey, a stand-up guy that we were all proud of. The Legislature of the State of South Dakota may not be corrupt, just moronic. I have little doubt that most States have their share of corruption. |

anon -- the only reason Torricelli was pulled wasn't because he was corrupt in my opinion. It was because he would lose. And you're right, most states have their fair share of corruption. New Jersey just has an exceptional amount of it aided and abetted by the voters here. |

Just for "hall of shame" comparisons and to "keep it real": Check out Arizona since before Ev Meacham, Nevada any hour of the day or night, Washington State's cozy little health care coterie, and most of all what goes on in both the governor's mansion and the so-called legislatures in both Texas and Louisiana. Those last two states make New Jersey's corruption look like a piker's antics by comparison. |

Seeing Sharpe James in action is breathtaking - the man knows how to command a room. He's always in action, slapping hands, throwing out psuedo-personal compliments "Looking good, you been working out? How's the kids?, Hey! God bless!" He makes it sound like he's talking personally to everyone who shakes his hand. Never bad news, the only bad news are the grumps who want to stem the tide of Sharpe James' huckster brand of benevolence. Sharpe James is like the lottery - he promises (and rarely delivers) riches beyond your wildest dreams, but he pays off just enough so the suckers keep lining up. I sent my check to Cory, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed - I really hope that anyone who can spare even $10 does the same. |
