Last month, we were discussing an upcoming appearance by Vice President Cheney, at a fundraiser for Senate hopeful Tom Kean, Jr. At the time, I thought:

Quote:

Why in the world would a Dick Cheney appearance be good for the Tom Kean Jr. campaign? All it will produce is a bunch of photos that he probably would rather not have around for the November election.

Well, that fundraiser was held yesterday, and it looks like Tom Kean, Jr. had the same thought -

Quote:

But there was one problem: Mr. Kean was a no-show.

Actually, Mr. Kean did show up at the event, which was held at the offices of the IDT Corporation in downtown Newark. But he did not make it until 6:15, roughly 15 minutes after Mr. Cheney's motorcade had left.

So what should have been a routine political story about a successful fund-raiser, netting close to $400,000, became one in which Mr. Kean was asked repeatedly whether he had deliberately avoided being photographed with the vice president, who is deeply unpopular in New Jersey.

...

For his part, Mr. Kean said he had been in Trenton all day, voting on important bills, because "I would not miss votes in order to make a political event." As soon as the Senate wrapped up, around 4 p.m., he traveled north "as quickly as I could." But instead of taking the New Jersey Turnpike, like any regular commuter between Trenton and Newark, he and his driver chose Route 1, which is usually crawling with bumper-to-bumper traffic at that hour.

You mean Kean actually stuck around to do his job, rather than run off for a photo op?

Kerry could use some pointers from Kean Jr.

Kean just didn't want to get shot in the face.

Seriously, though, if you were running for senate, would you want to be photographed with that psycho?

As, apparently, could Dick Cheney.

Or run off to buy an expensive vacation home in Maryland while Katrina bears down on New Orleans?

I work for IDT. The rumor going around yesterday was that we had opportunities to meet Mr. Cheney, for a mere $10,000 each. Blechh.

Kean claims he ran late when his driver took Rt. 1 north rather than the Turnpike- seriously. I actually like Kean, but anyone who can't figure out what road to take at rush hour in NJ can't properly represent our interests in DC.

If he was looking for an excuse, he should have said he got sick on an Italian Hot Dog or was looking for toll money.

I think it's cool that we can make fun of and criticize De Prez and the Veep.

Did you know that in some countries, the government illegally monitors its citizens' phone conversations and internet activity to keep an eye on dissenters?

Ooooppppps! Oh, sh-t! Whad I say now?

The Times article cast serious doubt upon the traffice excuse.

Amazing how critical they can be when it's not a national figure.

Tom, Jr. is a Jersey Boy. He knows the quickest way from Trenton to Newark. I suspect he didn't want the photo opportunity with the VP and took the long, well slow, way around. :-)

The previous thread on Cheney/Kean indicated that Kean's campaign is having trouble in matching the war chest Menendez has accumulated and is adding to regularly. Cheney is among the faithful a sure fire fund raiser. Kean needs the money, but not the exposure of being in the same room with Dead Eye Dick.

As an aside, New Jersey has got to be the only place in the country where Republicans have problems fund raising.

Straw,

What polls are you referring to? Interesting stuff. Rasmussen has Hillary beating Rudy by 10 points in NY.

what straw is referring to is an effort to deflect attention from the idiocy of republicans. First he brings up Kerry, then Hillary.

I can only assume that before the week is out somehow Monica will find a role to play in Kean's odyssey up Route 1/9.
