I don't see any dead bodies or kidnappings in progress. That can't be Baghdad. |

Cmon Straw. While I agree that in general a picture of downtown sometown in Turkey is boring, the context of the picture makes it hilarious. Is there really ANY honest reason that someone would try to pull that off? It is really just one more example of the majority party lying to the public. |

and badly. When he writes "boring", read "ouch, something else I'm not allowed to think about." |

That's basically it, isn't it? But in a way, it HAS become boring already. If the Republican positions are so rock-solid, why do they always have to fake the evidence? |

Does anyone have a source for the original photo? He's taken it off his web site and all the referencing sites I've found were linking to that URL. I hope somebody right-clicked and saved it before it went down! |

That's strange. The link to the picture on Kaloogian's site doesn't work. Must be one of those technical glitches.

Yeah...that's it...a technical glitch. Here's the photo of "dowtown Baghdad" from Kaloogian's site:
Here's a photo of a strangely similar street scene in the Istanbul suburb of Bakirkoy:

I can attest to the fact that Baghdad is much safer than the Bush-bashing liberal media would lead you to believe. I visited about three months ago and took this photo of downtown Baghdad. It is as peaceful a place as you could imagine:

Is that the Salvation Army down there trying to convert those Muslims to Christianity by force of tubas? By golly, Baghdad looks so "paisible" as the French say that it could be a small alpine village in France. Espresso and a croissant (there's a real pun there for the linguist!), anyone? |

http://www.kaloogianforcongress.com/aboutus.asp?id06=116&par06=104# An updated photo of downtown Baghdad is on his Web site. Kaloogian's selected photo of the vibrant street scene couldn't be more illustrative. Unfortunately, what it's illustrative of is his further idiocy and contempt for the voting public. |

TPM nails it down pretty well Quote:I'm actually shocked that this is the best this guy could do. Look, Baghdad is a vast city. There are people falling in love there. Children being born. The quiet desperation of existence. No one is saying or believes that there's black smoke or an ambulance in every street scene. Certainly you can find some parts of the city where you can take photos and things look relatively normal. What this joke of a picture -- given what it's supposed to demonstrate -- tells me is that Kaloogian's bogus fact-finding mission probably didn't get outside the heavily fortified safe zones guarded by the US military. And that's not surprising since even a lot reporters don't venture beyond those areas much any more.
viz an earlier thread in which Laura Ingraham's trip is mentioned. |

the question that comes to mind is, how bad must things really be over there when even the GOP tools have to completely make up to try and prove their point? |

I received the following in my email - Subject: Republicans today Things you have to believe to be a Republican today..... Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq. A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet. The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George Bush's driving record is none of our business Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery. You support states' rights, but the Attorney General can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant |

This just keeps getting funnier all the time. Kos is reporting that, according to the metadata in the new photo posted on the site, the picture supposedly taken during the trip he "just got back from" was actually shot in July 2005! One of the blue government buildings shown in the middleground was blown up in December. If I wanted to prove that Maplewood village was busy on a Saturday morning I wouldn't find it necessary to post a picture of suburban Toronto; nor would I find (after a trip in which I supposedly took hundreds of photos) that all I could get my hands on was a 9-month old aerial photo taken from a mile away. So I'm going to ask this question again (even though all the cons seem to be avoiding this thread like a flock of wheezing poultry): if the case for Iraq's progress is so solid, why can't real evidence be used to support it? |

I just had a nice visit with an old Turkish friend, and I showed her this picture and told the story behind it. Unsurprisingly, she immediately said, "that's not Baghdad, it's Istanbul," (that's where she's from) but also gave a little bit of interesting commentary. She said the picture is probably about eight years old, based on the "edo" sign in the left foreground, which is for a brand that hasn't existed for about that long. |
