everyone knows wars are good for the economy. just one more reason to be pro-war and pro-Bush. only pacificist idiot libs are against wars that spread freedom abroad and prosperity and safety at home. we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here, and so we can watch our portfolios grow. long live George W. Bush! |

That the nation's budgetary situation continues to deteriorate is because the administration's fiscal policy has been decidedly more about politics than policy. Even the tax cuts, which happened to be good policy, were still political in nature considering their appeal to the Republican's conservative base. At the same time, the politicos running the Bush reelection machine have consistently tried to placate or silence the liberals and special interests by throwing money at their every whim and desire. In mathematical terms, the administration calculates that satiated conservatives plus silenced liberals equals reelection." - Veronique de Rugy and Tad DeHaven, "'Conservative' Bush Spends More than 'Liberal' Presidents Clinton, Carter" The Cato Institute "It pains me to say this, but the Republicans in Washington seemingly have forgotten who they are and why voters sent them to the capital in the first place. Even though we now have GOP control of the White House, the Senate and the House, the bloated $ 2.25 trillion federal government has grown more rapidly on President Bush's watch than it did under Clinton. What in the world is going on here? Aren't the Republicans supposed to be the fiscally conscientious, anti-big government party?" - Stephen Moore, president, Club for Growth

I have often wondered if Bush's "chicken little" comments on the economy during the 2000 election campaign turned into a self-fulfilling prophesy. Economies are cyclical. The difference with the 2001 recession is that it lasted at least twice as long as most, which are usually no more than two years. |

Thank you, Bob. That's what our friend straw doesn't understand. But then if you're investing in a Christmas Club mode, which apparently applies to Straw, you're fat, dumb, and happy when you get any returns. |

It's always great to read Straw's postings. first of all, whatever he says makes you think that he doesn't know what he's talking about. Then he gets busy on the proof. |

wait until you're paying $5 for a gallon of regular. Funny. Anyone reading lately that Brazil decided 20 years ago to become independent of the oil market by developing fuels based on sugar cane? The country is close to 90% independent of petroleum market forces and "grows" most of its own fuel. That is quite an accomplishment for what was a "third world country" little more than a generation ago.

GOP Man: We love you too. I don't want to try to run things now. Your crowd is too busy running them... into the ground. You have made the past 5 years seem nostalgic, like a constant respooling of Back to the Future, except that you can't seem to get out of the 1920's and back to this era. Well, make the best of your time back there. Give our regards to Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. Tell Herb the vacuum really sucks. (there--- a double pun) |

Darryl: If you have a million bucks, you really don't have much. I assume that that is your point. As Nelson Bunker Hunt is quoted as saying, "A billion dollars isn't what it used to be." On the other hand, if you're happy with your million, be assured that a number of us passed you a long, long time ago. |

Yesterday was another good day for the Dow. It closed at the highest level in the last six years. It didn't set a new high. It just set a new high for the period Bush has been in office. |

Darryl: If you come from old money, everyone else comes from the moon. If you came from old money, you wouldn't be posting on MOL. If you came from old money, you wouldn't be posting. If your blood is blue, the reason may be that you just need oxygen. You've been breathing in the Republican stale air for at least as long as I have seen your posts on MOL. Most importantly, however, as I said, if you came from old money, you wouldn't be posting. You've demonstrated what you are. I wouldn't say more if I were you. It just helps us to place you at your level. |

Actually, most of the NE old money I know of so guilt ridden they adopt leftist causes because they themselves are worthless and would be wards of the state if they weren't wards of the trusts they inherited because they don't have any real world application. Hence, they'd have all the time in the world to post right here. I'd bet Strawberry family is only two generations deep into the wealth he's into, and his family holds real jobs to set himself apart from the rest. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. |

Interesting how the administration wants to keep those very wards, "who have no real world application," well heeled with inherited trust money by abolishing estate and inheritance taxes ( the administration sinisterly calls them "death taxes," and of course, nobody wants "death taxes). Perhaps because the administration's "leader" has his roots in older NE money, he can't liberate himself or others from being on the family dole.

Bush actually increased his wealth with the Rangers deal. It's more than Kerry could ever hope for or that Teddy ever accomplished. Bush actually took a risk in oil, though it failed by all accounts. Best to use other people's money for financial ventures, as anyone in investments ought to know. What risk did Teddy take other than get behind the wheel? |

None. You're right about Teddy. Bush lost what little money (and effort) he invested in oil. Did nicely on the Harkins deal (though that one is a bit suspicious and might not hold up to regulatory scrutiny in any state but TX). The Rangers deal was nice for him. No real up-front investment and a big cashout. Nobody has yet investigated him on his backstage role in the Brannif deal to try to sink Southwest Airlines. That's the snake in the woodpile. Along with the other Love Field vs D/FW deals. |
