In the last couple of weeks three of the strongest supporters of the war that I know have told me we have to get out. These guys are staunch Bush supporters. There's no doubt they are indicative of many more, like William F. Buckley, who have reconciled themselves with reality. It's only a matter of time before the "decider" gets the word and makes the decision. The Democrats will be upstaged and embarrassed. John Kerry introduced an excellent resolution last week, but has no co-sponsors (www.BeAboutPeace.com). John Murtha's resolution has been stuck with about 100 co-sponsors for months. In the meantime, help keep the pressure on and join the mass march against the war in New York City next Saturday, April 29th. Take the MidtownDirect "Peace Train" from Maplewood at 10:52 am or from South Orange at 10:56 am. The march starts at 12:00 noon and goes from Broadway and 20th Street to Foley Square where there will be a Peace Festival. Look for South Mountain Peace Action's table there. For details go to www.BeAboutPeace.com |

What good are co-sponsors if the legislation doesn't *go* anywhere? |

What good is legislation, if our consumerism continues to drive a need for cheap resources and military intervention to secure such resources; be it through "regional stabilization" or even "democratization"? We do so even at the expense of turning a blind eye to human rights atrocities perpetrated by our "democratic" partners. |

Anon, Bush will announce "Mission Accomplished" -- a democratic political process is in place, the terrorists are on the run and it's time to turn Iraq over to the Iraqis. He'll announce a phased withdrawal of troops and the redeployment of some to "over-the-horizon" locations re: John Murtha. The administration will note that the Shiites as well as the insurgents are already fighting Al-Qaeda and he will offer our support to them. An offer of large-scale reconstruction of the oil industry will be made. Bush's poll numbers will go up, the Democratic Party leadership will appear craven and indecisive, and control of the House and Senate will be up for grabs. This scenario may be a long-shot, but I think it's a real possibility. As I pointed out, I think there would be strong support for it in the Republican rank-and-file. And, especially in light of Blair's growing problems and the incident in Basra yesterday, there may be strong pressure from the Brits to bring this disaster to a conclusion.

Paul, I absolutely agree with your above post. I'm sure we have two distinct opinions on why but your analysis is correct. I was going to post basically your same post when I first saw this thread but declined because it would get me nothing more than the usual chorus of hecklers. I'm guessing since you posted it the libs will sip their morning coffee and ponder how philosophical you are. As much as the libs paint Bush as bumbling, he will do exactly as you wrote and the poll numbers will go up and the Repubs will maintain. In the past month, we have already had two major divisions return home down here with the usual hugs, fanfare, and huge local press coverage. As this happens more and more, look for the Repubs approval to rise in Red America. I don't expect much movement from the blue states but those aren't the seats in play. |

Right. Brilliant strategy. Suck up the Democrats' (actually the LIBERAL DEMOCRATS') hue and cry since 9/11 itself and bring the troops home, then get the accolades. Problem is, southerner, it won't pull the wool over anyone's eyes this time.

tulip, You will be surprised. Remember, in MOL world everyone outside of New Jersey is a hick and a gullibe half wit. As soon as the election is over Bush will probably send everyone back to Iraq. Or maybe Iran. It depends on how well he is spelling after a night of celebration. |
