In Case You Missed It Corzine's Retreat Editorial | "Stand firm, Governor" Published In THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, Thursday, April 20, 2006 The office of governor in New Jersey is supposedly the most powerful in the country. So far, you wouldn't know it by Gov. Corzine. Corzine's meekness was on full display in his mystifying vote of confidence for State Sen. Wayne Bryant (D., Camden). Bryant is reportedly under investigation by federal authorities for allegations concerning his former cushy, $38,200-a-year consulting job at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. While on the payroll for doing goodness-only-knows at the school, Bryant also secured millions in state funds for UMDNJ. He's chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. That porky arrangement was in perfect keeping with Bryant's view of state government. Over the years, he has enriched himself and several members of his family at the trough of taxpayer-funded jobs and contracts. The federal probe has prompted Republican calls for Bryant to give up his powerful chairmanship. Corzine at first trod where he need not have, saying that forcing out Bryant was "premature," and that accusations are not proof of wrongdoing. Apparently that wasn't good enough for Bryant, because Corzine soon issued a follow-up statement expressing confidence in Bryant's "leadership," and "respect" for the senator. It was an unseemly act of kissing up, especially after Bryant had declared the governor's proposed budget dead on arrival. "This is not the budget I will be voting on June 30," Bryant huffed. Maybe Corzine still holds out hope of winning over the committee chairman in budget negotiations, but so far this political romance looks very one-sided. He's only been governor three months, but it isn't comforting that so far Corzine is demonstrating a pattern of retreating at the slightest protest from the Legislature. In his inaugural address, Corzine vowed to fight corruption and rebuked lawmakers for neglecting their fiscal duties. But when Bryant and Sen. Sharpe James (D., Newark) cried foul, Corzine backed down the next day and essentially apologized for being too harsh. Sooner or later, the governor will need to stand up to such bullying. Taxpayers might accept Corzine's proposed sales tax increase, grudgingly, if they believe he is doing all he can to clean up financial waste. But it's hard to sweep the system clean while you're backpedaling. # # # Paid for by The New Jersey Republican State Committee 150 West State Street, Suite 230 | Trenton, NJ | 08608

The New Jersey Republican State Committee paid to have it distributed to residents of NJ as we come to grips with the fact that Corzine is not a capable Governor. |

So you're wondering if we missed a paid advertisement, masquerading as an editorial, run by Corzine's opposition, which ran in an out-of-state newspaper? I did. And golly, I'm amazed they aren't totally supportive. Who knew? |

Front page headline in today's Star-Ledger:
Quote:I won't wait for you, Corzine tells Legislature Governor asks faster action on tax reform and other top priorities Friday, April 21, 2006 BY TOM HESTER AND JEFF WHELAN Star-Ledger Staff Gov. Jon Corzine is growing impatient with the Legislature. In speeches and interviews this week, the former CEO and newcomer to Trenton has made it clear he wants lawmakers to pick up the pace on key parts of his agenda, including property tax reform, stem cell research and government accountability.
Remainder of article here: http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-6/1145600312291410.xml&coll=1 Big surprise that you get a difference in tone in an article that is written by independent journalists instead of a political hack.

Tom, Philly generally watches Jersey politics closely since a great deal of its workers come from the state...Silly of you not to know this.. Reminds me of the time you said Bloomberg was a Democrat. |

I didn't say Philly didn't watch New Jersey politics, I said it was out of state. And I'll stand by that statement. As for Bloomberg's affiliation, well you can read the Wikipedia entry on him here Quote:In 2001 the incumbent mayor, Rudy Giuliani, was prevented by term limits from running for re-election. Several well-known New York City politicians aspired to succeed him. Bloomberg, a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, decided to run for mayor as a member of the Republican Party, reportedly to avoid the crowded field in the Democratic primary.
or New York Sun columnist John Avlon who quotes Conservative Party leader Michael Long, "I think the mayor's a nice guy, I really do, but I consider him a Republican by convenience only...the philosophy I believe Mike Bloomberg has is of a liberal Democrat." What's in a name? |

Hoops, I will. This article is a joke. If Corzine is in fact this weak kneed then it will continue to show itself. But to make such comments about him after 3 months is foolish. Let the guy do something before he gets jumped on. And yes, he won the election so let him govern. However, I did, almost spew my drink when I read the first line. Either this guy is way, way out there or New Jersey has a severe self identity problem. For a state without a pro football or baseball team, no real college teams, and no real hoops teams, and as blue as they come, that first line is hilarious. And didn't your last governor.... oh, just forget it. |

Bryant aside, it's clear to me that Corzine's ineffectual stab at giving passing voice to property tax reform has now been amplied because of the approximately 50% rejection of school budgets in parts of New Jersey where the people are actually allowed to vote on them. Even with that, he's still got Maplewood in the bag. |

COrzine has propsed cutting over $2 billion from the state budget and holding spending in Abbott districts until there is more accountability. Even Trenton GOP leaders are on record as saying Corzine deserves credit for taking these measures. |

For a state without a pro football or baseball team, no real college teams, and no real hoops teams, I'm not a huge sports fan, but isn't there a pro football team that plays at the Meadowlands? Don't they play Basketball at Seton Hall? I think there are some other examples. |

Because no one outside of Jerzee or Detroit watches that so called sport. I heard their playoffs began. With the NBA playoffs and baseball, I'm sure I will at least see some toothless goon holding that cup over his head in a few weeks. But that will be about it. Again, Seton Hall, are you serious? |

Hey Straw..... Who owns the Philly Inquirer? Who owns the American Spectator? Who gave Nixon one million for his '72 re-election campaign? Who was hauled before a Virgina Grand Jury and asked to explain how money got from the American Spectator magazine to Ken Starr to Starrs STAR witness? Who was hauled before a Virgina Grand Jury and asked to explain how & why 2 Ark. State Troopers got money from the American Spectator? That would be Richard Mellon Scaife. For the Politically uninitiated. I'll make a deal with ya Straw, You dont post the Philly Inquirer as a source, and I won't post CounterPunch, or Capitol HIll BLue, or Wayne Madson as sources. I'm assuming you do know who or what CounterPunch, or Capitol HIll BLue, or Wayne Madson, is or are. Come on Straw, thats a 3 for 1 deal. & Wayne Madson does some good work, that would be the price of admission, right there. |
