House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Ill., center, gets out of a Hydrogen Alternative Fueled automobile, left, as he prepares to board his SUV, which uses gasoline, after holding a new conference at a local gas station in Washington, Thursday, April 27, 2006 to discuss the recent rise in gas prices. Hastert and other members of Congress drove off in the Hydrogen-Fueled cars only to switch to their official cars to drive back the few block back to the U.S. Capitol. Yep, right up there with those who drive to the village or the train station when they live a few blocks away - then bitch about the environment and the cost of gas. |

Do you know someone who does this, or do you just asume that people do both (drive to the train and complain)? Also, define "a few blocks"... |

Actually it would be like getting into a Hybrid parked in your driveway and driving 'a few blocks' to the train station where you pick up your humongous SUV and then drive off to where ever. Its hypocritical to the nth degree. Hastert could care less, all he wants is your vote and the status quo. |

Hoops, He's a politician. What do you expect? They are all hypocrites. I especially love the stories about Bush and his travels costing the taxpayers X dollars in fuel, security, street closings, etc, etc. They did this for Clinton for 8 years and will do it for the next Pres either Repub or Dem. If you are still stuck on the hypocrite issue in dealing with politics then you really shouldn't follow politics. All of them are hypocrites. Accept it and move on to beating the other sides hypocrites. |

Rastro, I know a lot of people who do both. A few blocks is just that. A few blocks. |

It seems pretty ill-planned, but the man does get Secret Service protection, since he'd become president if Bush and Cheney died or resigned. I can't imagine the Secret Service has hybrids ... |

Of course politicians are all hypocrites, but they should be a little smarte than to be caught in their lies so easily. I also know several people on my block who chose to drive instead of walk to the train station. I almost always walk and have never driven myself to the station...however, if one of them offers me a ride on the way there, i always accept with a smile. |

I believe that the security rules for major political figures require them to ride in SUVs or similar steel-laden land yachts. Don't think a Prius really holds a driver and two body guards very well for the Speaker of the House. I believe Pelosi and others of that type of rank also must ride in heavy (bullet-proof?) cars. |

Does Speaker Hastert own the SUV or does it belong to the "family" (i.e. Teresa Heinz Kerry) like John Kerry's SUV? |

thats not the issue. If the secret service mandates that these guys drive in tanks for their protection then he should be getting into the tank for his protection and driving where ever. So why then did he drive around the corner in a hybrid? Great photo-op in the President Bust roll up the sleeves and get to work mold. it is hypocritical and it is funny. |

Because the hybrid was part of the photo op to address hybrid vehicles. However, getting into an SUV is not in and of itself hypocritical if you know that it's a requirement that he ride in a large vehicle. Pictures are worth 1000 words, but that doesn't mean the words are accurate. You're reaching. |

No, you're in blind defense mode (no news). If DH didn't realize what clueless hypocrite he'd look like -- regardless of his heart felt feelings about alternative fuels -- then he's more out of touch than previously indicated. That "news conference" at the gas station was as lame as the Admin.'s $100 rebate idea. What a dopey move. |
