McClellan Asked About Bush Singing National Anthem In Spanish

From a ThinkProgress commenter to the White House Press Briefing in just three hours. CNN’s Ed Henry is on the case:

HENRY: Scott, on Friday the president firmly said he believes the national anthem should be sung in English. Kevin Phillips, the Republican analyst, wrote a book called American Dynasty. And in there, he claims that, during the president’s 2000 campaign, he did sing The Star Spangled Banner in Spanish at some Hispanic festivals, various campaign events.

Are you aware that you recall that from the 2000 campaign?

MCCLELLAN: No, I don’t.

HENRY: Do you think that that would be counter to what the president laid out on Friday?

MCCLELLAN: I don’t recall that, and I’m not going to try and speculate on something I haven’t looked into.

--------------------------

The right wing is up in arms over a new version of the Star-Spangled Banner written in Spanish. Last week President Bush stated that “the national anthem ought to be sung in English.” Yesterday Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) introduced a resolution requiring the Star-Spangled banner to be sung only in English.

In his press release, Alexander said the Star-Spangled Banner has “never before…been rendered in another language.”

But in 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Education commissioned a Spanish-language version of “The Star Spangled Banner.” The State Department’s website also features four-separate versions of the anthem in Spanish.

It appears xenophobia isn’t part of the American tradition.

and
From Kevin Phillips' American Dynasty:

But in his book American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips notes that during Bush’s first presidential campaign, he would often sing the national anthem in Spanish. From pg. 142:

When visiting cities like Chicago, Milwaukee or Philadelphia in pivotal states he would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parites, sometimes joining in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in Spanish, sometimes partying with a "Viva Bush" mariachi band flown in from Texas.

This is no surprise. Bush is a liar and a hypocrite of the highest order.

Worst president ever.

Straw is right. Bush lying is boring, he does it every few minutes. No news here. Wake us up when he tells the truth about something.

What if this had been Clinton? Or if Dems acted like Repubs in response?

If this had been Bubba, the wingnuts would be looking for some way to use this fascinating morsel to impeach him.

Notey,
What's your point? You guys would impeah Bush tomorrow if you had the votes. Your just frustrated that we had the numbers to go after your beloved Clinton and you guys don't have squat to stop Bush. And your right, if Hillary were to win in 2008 and we had Congress, you are darn right we'd find something in a four year period to impeach her if we had the numbers. No one said politics is a gentlemen's game.

My point is that Republicans -- not unanimously, but as a group -- would gladly make the effort to impeach over whatever possible scrap of impropriety they could find or mock up. I don't think that's true of Dems, who would love to impeach W, but not because they want the power, but because he deserves it for several well-established reasons.

Notey,
If you don't see it then your glasses really are true blue. So the Repubs impeach Clinton for nothing and were wrong, but if you guys could you would impeach Bush for "serious" issues. Please. The seriousness is all in the eye of the beholder. Lying to a federal grand jury is a serious offense in my eyes.
