Oh man...... Goss is gone. You know he's making the move to avoid a major take-down. Looks like Hookergate has really got some traction. I hope the guy that replaces him is competent and clean, but that's probably just wishful thinking. |

he resigned in protest over the Bush Administration's misuse of intelligence before the war. he's had a crisis of conscience, and he's going to expose the whole scheme. |

I don't know the reason. It's only been 18 months. There is an active investigation of contracting matters related to Hookergate, limo companies, poker nights, etc. Strange timing. If it ISN"T the reason, why not wait another week or two? |

It occurred to me that for all the "gates" that this president has been able to slide out from under the one that clobbers him could be, well, Watergate.

I like this part: "It gets even more interesting: the man who has been identified as the CEO of Shirlington has a 62-page rap sheet (I recently obtained a copy) that runs from at least 1979 through 1989 and lists charges of petit larceny, robbery, receiving stolen goods, assault, and more. Curiously—or perhaps not so curiously given the company's connections—Shirlington Limousine is also a Department of Homeland Security contractor; according to the Washington Post, last fall it won a $21.2 million contract for shuttle services and transportation support. Why is it one vs the other? "Hookergate vs drunkkennedygate" Shouldn't we be ashamed of any politician who embarasses our country or their position? |

Well, yes. Certainly. But it will be interesting to compare how much press the two stories get. The Kennedy incident is comparatively trivial. And although members of the clan have had some serious problems with drinking, it has yet to be proven that alcohol was involved in this instance. On the other hand, the whole hooker/limo/Foggo/Goss/Duke think is a MAJOR story involving a lot of powerful people doing very bad things with our money. |

BILL KRISTOL: It wasn’t done in a routine way. I don’t think people — certainly people close to Goss did not expect this to happen. Senior congressmen and senators didn’t expect this to happen. I’m not sure the White House expected this to happen. … I do think this was sudden. It was unexpected. There will be more of a story that will come out. I don’t know what it implies for the future of the agency and Goss’ effort to shake up an institution, an institution that’s very difficult to shake up. But I do not believe it was part of a long-planned — SHEPHARD SMITH: How the heck could it have been? In a Bush White House world, things are lined up and they’re put out in a sort of meticulous, controlled way. I can envision — if this had been planned in advance, there would have been almost an immediate announcement of a replacement, the hugs, the thank yous, probably a medal or something. Instead what we have now is a vacuum, and you have to wonder what could have gone boom like that to cause him, A) to tender the resignation and, B) for the President to accept it under these circumstances. KRISTOL: Well you and I think alike, Shep. Either it’s brilliant minds or suspicious minds thinking alike — SMITH: It is just out of character. KRISTOL: It looked that way to me. What was striking about the statement in the Oval Office with the President, he didn’t say, “I will serve until my successor is confirmed,” which is the usual practice. In the written statement, he says he intends to be there for a few weeks to help ensure a smooth transition, but implying he could well leave before his successor is confirmed by the United States Senate. So again, I think there were either serious disputes or some internal problem at the agency or some scandal conceivably involving an associate of Goss’. Who knows? Something that popped this week and that caused this sudden event this Friday. |

1971 Ill health leads to retirement from the CIA. Goss moves to Sanibel Island, where several other retired agency officers live. 1971-74 Goss helps found the award-winning Island Reporter weekly newspaper (partners include other ex-CIA officers) and plays a key role in the drive to incorporate Sanibel. 1974: Sanibel incorporates, and Goss is elected the first mayor. 1974-82 Goss wins re-election to the Sanibel City Council. His eight years include four one-year terms as mayor. 1982 Goss, a Republican, is appointed by Democratic Gov. Bob Graham to fill a vacancy on the Lee County Commission. He assumes the seat in January 1983. 1984 Goss wins election to a four-year term on the Lee County Commission. 1988-2002 Goss serves in the U.S. House for seven two-year terms (wins with more than 72 percent of the vote for four terms; runs unopposed in three elections). April 2002 Sig Vandenberg of North Naples is sentenced to two months of house arrest and three years of probation for calling a Goss aide and threatening to kill the congressman. February 2002 After saying he planned to retire after his current term in office, Goss announces he will seek re-election because leaders from President Bush to local constituents ask him to help guide the nation through the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. January 2003 House Republican leaders waive a term limit to allow Goss to continue as chairman of House intelligence committee, a position he has held since 1997. August 2004 President Bush nomminates Goss as new CIA director, replacing George Tenet. Sept. 24, 2004 Goss sworn in as the 19th director of central intelligence November 2004 The top two officials of the clandestine service, the CIA’s most famous division, resigned over differences with Goss’s aides. Dozens more said to leave. March 2, 2005 Goss told an audience at the Reagan Library in California: “I’m a little amazed at the workload.” April 21 National Intelligence Director John Negroponte took over as head of U.S. spy agencies under intelligence reform law. May, 2005 With the help of U.S. intelligence, Pakistani forces arrested al-Qaida No. 3 Abu Farraj al-Libbi. Later that month, a missile from an unmanned CIA aircraft killed al-Qaida operative Haitham al-Yemeni. June 24, 2005 In a public embarrassment for the CIA, an Italian judge ordered the arrests of 13 agency employees over the 2003 rendition – or abduction – of an imam suspected of terrorism. Aug. 23, 2005 CIA sent Congress copies of its highly critical – and highly classified – report on what went wrong before 9/11. Sept. 22, 2005 At a town hall meeting with CIA employees, Goss laid out his vision for the agency, facing tough questions about its direction. Oct. 5, 2005 Goss announced he won’t form disciplinary review boards for failures before 9/11. Oct. 25, 2005 In a statement about the CIA’s accountability for the 9/11 attack, Goss says, “This report unveiled no mysteries. In the four years since 9/11, much has been done throughout the Intelligence Community to improve and reform the way we do business—especially here at CIA. ... If I found need to take performance accountability measures, my respect for this institution would compel me to do so. This Agency is filled with good people who are doing great work for America. I am proud to be associated with them.” May 5, 2006 Goss resigns as the CIA director.
