BERLIN (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush told a German newspaper his best moment in more than five years in office was catching a big perch in his own lake. "You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001. "I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday. Bush said the worst moment was September 11 when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

I'm trying to think if there's a greater accomplishment that this administration can point to than W catching a whopper. Usually he's telling a whopper like, "Mission Accomplished" which would have been his greatest accomplishment had it been the case. Perhaps this president is coming to terms with what a terrible job he's done. |

Frankly, I don't believe Bush about the size of the perch he landed.
Quote: "Perch is probably the number one winter fishery in the state," says Greg Power, central district fisheries supervisor for the Game and Fish Department. Not many lakes offer the opportunity for truly large perch - those weighing three-quarters of a pound or more. But numbers seem more desirable than size. People like to catch lots of fish, and as long as those fish are big enough to keep, most anglers are happy. Perhaps that's why perch are so popular in winter. In the right lake they can dunk a bobber all day long and yield nice frying fillets as well.

For once, Bush isn't lying. Catching a fish is undoubtedly his greatest accomplishment over the past 5 years. This is probably not going over well with Laura, either. |

Interesting...record white and yellow perch are generally smaller than 3 lbs. Maybe it was some other kind, or a Nile Perch. They are common it Texas - land of canned hunts and introduced species. I guess American fish aren't good enough for him. Nile perch are ugly. Our own native yellow perch are delicious and beautiful.

I'd love to know Laura's true feelings about W's answer to that question! No, Bush's finest moment wasn't some particularly momentous accomplishment of our armed forces, nor the passage of some especially wonderful bill. It wasn't anything affecting the country in any way. It was: catching a fish. Maybe we're not getting the entire story... maybe the question was, "so, what was the best moment you've had in the past few years while fishing?" |

It brings to mind the fact that in an interview in December of 2001 Bush said it’s been a fabulous year for him and Laura. He then caught himself and offered a more appropriate somber statement. Regardless, President of the US or average citizen I just couldn’t fathom how anyone could say it was a fabulous year only 3 months after 9/11. |

I've done a ot of fishing. If you are fishing in private, stocked water, and you have a scale to weigh your catch with, you are a wanker. |

I have to agree with him. That is far and away his best moment as president and something the nation could really get behind. God help us. |

Apparently he was talking about a Largemouth Bass. 7 and 1/2 pound largemouth is quite respectable. Definately one of five I would keep were I a tournament fisherman. |

OK, so he doesn't totally suck at fishing. In a stocked lake. During the interview with Bild (a conservative tabloid) Bush repeatedly referred to Chancellor Merkel as "Angela." Way to show respect for one of your few remaining heads of state who can be considered friendly. |

Did he say "perch" in English, or was it a mistranslation into German and back? Any Texas boy knows a largemeout bass. They don't have largemouth over there so maybe they translated it wrong. By the way - boasting about fishing in a private, stocked lake; could there be any better metaphor for George W Bush's outlook? It's similar to his business career - competition is eliminated and a few extra prizes are scattered around. |
