Didn't you start a thread like this about two months ago? What's happened in between?

Though it is nice to see the Dow up around 1.2% this year, it's still off its high for the year by a bit more than 5%. I'd love to see the Dow at 12500 by year's end. More importantly (for me), I'd like to see the NASDAQ over 2,500.

Which liberals are complaining?

I was much happier a couple of months ago when the Dow was at 11600, but I'll take any gains over the year. You're exciteed that the Dow took a big dip lately and is starting to recover? You really get excited over little things. 11,000 is purely a psychological number, even less so that 10,000 was.

It takes some real ignorance to think that ONE DAY's market performance can possibly be credited to some strength in the administration.

Duuuuuuuhhhhh!

Isn't this the third or fourth time this year the Dow has cracked 11,000?

Man, the celebration never stops for Republicans as long as the market keeps yo-yoing. Dow drops below 11K? Oh well, next month it'll pop over it again. Par-TAY!

The Administration's Press Secretary, Tony Snow, commented on this milestone today. He said, "It's a number, and every time there's one of these benchmarks people want something."

Wait, hold on ...

I'm sorry, my mistake. Mr. Snow was not commenting on the Dow reaching 11,000. He was commenting on U.S. deaths in Iraq reaching 2500 -
Q Tony, American deaths in Iraq have reached 2,500. Is there any response or reaction from the President on that?

MR. SNOW: It's a number, and every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks people want something.
...

Q Was he told about the benchmark, the President?

MR. SNOW: I don't know. I'm sure he will hear about it.
So, to sum up, here are the priorities -

When the Dow reaches 11,000 - "Whooo-Hooo!"

When the number of troop deaths in Iraq reaches 2500 - "It's a number."

Oh, and the other difference is, that the Dow number can go down. The other one, just goes up.

And up.

Notice how Nohero left this small part out of Snow's briefing.

"Any President who goes through a time of war feels very deeply the responsibility for sending men and women into harm's way, and feels very deeply the pain that the families feel. And this President is no different. You've seen it many times. You saw it, you saw it when he was in that ballroom, Terry, and you had this crowd of servicemen and women who were cheering loudly for the President, and he got choked up. So it's always a sad benchmark, and one of the things the President has said is that these people will not die in vain.

And part of what happened this very week when the President went to Baghdad, and he sat down with the Prime Minister and he sat down with the cabinet, and he sat down with the President and Vice President, he sat down with the national security team, and he sat down with the leaders of all the major political parties, what he saw now is that after all of this, what you have in Iraq is a freestanding government that has been elected by the Iraqi people. It has a Prime Minister who is going to be there for four years, who is determined to act as a Prime Minister, who is determined to lead, who is setting priorities, and he's somebody we can work with. You have a Minister of Defense who has significant experience and is already working with his colleagues, not only here at the Pentagon, but also General Casey and others in the field. The President understands that those deaths cannot be in vain, and you've got a government now that can help ensure that that is not the case."

So, have you been waiting all day for me to post?

Since I provided you with a link to the entire briefing, I hardly think that you can criticize me for focusing on an excerpt.

Interesting that Mr. Snow says that the President cares about the casualties, because "The President understands that those deaths cannot be in vain".

In other words, use the past deaths to justify continuing your policies.
