Orrin Hatch, hard-core GOP senator, who is such a mouthpiece for the Christian right and writes songs about church and family values, etc, called people in the United Arab Emirates to get drug charges against producer Dallas Austin, who brought cocaine into the country, dropped. Can you say h y p o c r i s y ? I wonder how much it will cost Mr. Austin. What do you think about this? article |

Hatch is a lot more nuanced than the left often gives him credit for. However, this is really weird. Apparently there is no question of guilt and the sentence (four years) was reasonable. In many countries, especially Islamic one, this would have led to a life sentence or the death penalty. Does the perp have to serve his sentence here in the US? Or did he get a "Get out of Jail Free" card in his Monopoly set? Or is there more to the story as far as guilt is concerned? |

I haven't heard how the drugs were found, but it seems clear that he definitely had the coke. And as a result of Hatch's involvement, just after Austin was sentenced, the charges were summarily dropped. |

This isn't the first time Hatch has done something like this that seems counterintuitive. But despite some of his politics he's by all accounts a good guy, humane, and sticks up for American citizens. |
