What do you all think of the property tax proposals thrown out for consideration by Corzine? Will the legislature have the nerve to take on the property tax morass?
In many ways Corzine's proposals seem to be just another shell game. I think people want real spending cuts and not shifting of taxes to other items. And some facts supporting what savings, if any, could be realized would be nice. Shouldn't we look at which saves more -- merging small local entities voluntarily, eliminating county governments (that just sounds so much easier, politically palatable, faster solution) or consolidating everything on a county basis (as is done in much of the rest of the country). The thing I find most curious is the idea of paying towns/school districts to merge to realize savings -- why wouldn't the savings realized be enough of an incentive? I'm not feeling hopeful that any of this is going to lead to a better system, just a different system with different problems. His ideas sound like they will ultimately be more expensive in the end -- at least for our towns' taxpayers. |
