Iran had better cease and desist by August 31 or the UN will certainly be forced to issue a second useless resolution. |

This resolution is not militarily actionable, thanks to the Russians. Iran plans to respond by August 22. Israelis have a lot of work to do before then. |

Obviously, anything the UN does is going to be questioned, especially regarding the Middle East. However, this resolution does at least make it clear that the current mideast battle in no way turns attention away from Iran's current nuclear activity. Again, three cheers for Bolton who is leading the charge. Just another reason why he deserves confirmation. |

So the UN is useful after all, if only to prove the god-like omnipotence of George W. Bush, aka King George The Wise. |

Do you think Bolton will be able to convince the Chinese and Russians to go along with us? The UN is an empty shell. They have all the force and authority of a yippie dog, nipping at one's heels. Bolton will not change that. |

Ahmadinejad has promised a reply to the U.N. by August 22nd, that being the corresponding date to the 27th of Rajab in the muslim calender, which is the date that Mohammed made a nightime journey to Jerusalem, lighting up the sky after his " flight". Do you believe there is any significance to that nut job? Glad Israel has the patriot missle batteries. Ahmadinejad believes that the 12th mahdi who will lead the sh'ia to worldy paradise at the equivalent of the end of days is living in a well in Iran. The believers in the 12th mahdi believe the world as we know it will end in 2 years and it is incumbent upon them to assist bringing about this end. Um... you think U.N. resolutions are of interest to a worldleader like that? |

so are you making a prediction for 8/22 or just blowing more smoke? When that date passes without an attack on Israel by Iran will you re-evaluate your positions?

Hoops- As part of your further education : The leader of Iran's world view and decision making is tied to his own peculiar religious perspective, which is pretty much geared to what concerns you about your boy Bush and the "rapture". In this case it is real, and scary stuff. His use of this date as a date for reply, as well as the language, imagery, and symbolism relevant to islam that he has used so far, shows that he believes himself the leader of muslims and a man destined to bring about the arrival of the 12th mahdi. That is through a lot of bloodshed, regardless of whether he tries to launch a missle at Tel Aviv on 8/22. |

Getting other major powers to commit publicly to a position on Iran is hardly a waste of time. If the resolution is weak or unlikely to lead to action, those with a stake in the outcome have to weigh their options accordingly - especially if their political project requires the assistance of other countries to succeed. It's part of a process that requires skill to use effectively. The problem is that Bush's past stupidity has lowered everyone's expectations of what America can accomplish. |

anon- There you go, don't worry, be happy. Montagnard- International organizations are a joke. The UN can't even investigate the " oil for food " scandal properly. NATO is dead in the water without US participation, and Russia and China have transformed themselves into the " say no to America" twins. |

Which is exactly why Jed Clampett is more qualified to run the UN than Kooky Kofi ever was. |

Granny? Nah. Remember, it was Jed who was shootin' at some food when up through the ground came a bubblin' crude. Oil that is. So Jed is perfect. He has experience in these areas.
