As we write, speak, sit....CNN is conducting a two hour program, "Countdown to Cease-Fire" in the Middle East. I am so pleased that network news is taking the cause of peace seriously, hoping and working toward the ideal.
Thanks, CNN.

Syria still transferring supply of rockets, missiles to Hezbollah
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent

Syria continues its efforts to transfer large quantities of war materiel, including rockets, to Lebanon, in an effort to assist Hezbollah in its war against Israel, a senior Israel Defense Forces source told Haaretz on Saturday.

According to the IDF source, the air force has succeeded in partially stemming the arms transfers, but intelligence shows that supply convoys have managed to cross into Lebanon from Syria.

Senior Syrian army and intelligence officers are involved in the arms smuggling, according to the senior IDF source, who says it is unlikely this continues without the explicit support of the regime in Damascus.

Two specific types of weapons - anti-tank missiles and rockets used to target Israeli civilians - are of concern.

The alert levels of the Syrian army, especially on the Golan Heights, is at its highest levels since the Lebanon War in 1982. The Syrian preparedness is mostly defensive, but the IDF is not excluding the possibility that Damascus will initiate a limited ground operation during the closing stages of the war.

Such an act, from a Syrian point of view, would aim at improving its position toward the end of the current confrontation and force Israel to begin negotiations on a broader diplomatic initiative that would include the return of the Golan Heights.

Part of the IDF's defensive deployment is meant to counter such a threat, including the deployment of anti-aircraft missiles in Haifa and the Sharon to intercept possible launches of Syrian Scud surface-to-surface ballistic missiles targetting Israeli cities.

In another development, in recent fighting, IDF forces uncovered the bodies of a number of fighters who appear to belong to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. No identifying documents were discovered on the bodies but tattoos suggest they belong to the Iranian force.

According to IDF sources, Iran sent several dozen Revolutionary Guard fighters to bolster the ranks of Hezbollah.

Hizbullah refuses to disarm in south Lebanon
By JPOST.COM STAFF

The Lebanese government was scheduled to meet on Sunday to discuss the disarming of Hizbullah south of the Litani River, but postponed that meeting following indications by the guerrilla group that they would not do so.

Hizbullah's refusal was conveyed to Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora through the group's representative in the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri

So, SLK, are you suggesting that there should be no cease fire?

Notehead--the real question is what happens next. If the UN forces are simply a buffer until things quiet down again, then what SLK says is very correct. This will hold until people start shooting again, most likely starting with Katushas raining down on Israel, perhaps with another Hezbollah border incursion.

If the world decides to once and for all find a real resolution to the Israeli--Palestinian problem, then this might be the cease fire that starts the process. I seriously doubt this will happen, however, because it would require Syria and Iran to overtly participate in the peace process and recognize Israel and disarm Hezbollah. And for that to happen, it would require huge changes in Iran and Syria politically (as in Syria and Iran giving up dreams of a Shiite-dominated Lebanon), as well as enormous bribery from the rest of the world to encourage this. Read the interesting article on Hezbollah in the NY Times Sunday Magazine to get a clearer picture of what Hezbollah and Syria/Iran are really after.

This is not really about Israel and the Palestinians (when was the last time anyone mentioned Hamas in the last 32 days?). It is about Shiite domination of the Middle East-Israel is simply a convenient rallying point for now.

It seems that the whole series of events of the past month were almost designed to push Bush into going after Iran. So many are so intent on demonizing Iran and insisting they are about to blow everyone up. Fortunately, Bush has been wise on this, and not too quick to take the bait. Thank Goodness!!!
