Early in the year, DeWine was consistently ahead. Even though the incumbent had a seven-point advantage in June, our three-poll rolling average confirms a long-term if very gradual movement in Brown's direction.

Rhode Island Senate:
Chafee Now Trailing by 5
Chafee (R) 41% Whitehouse (D) 46%
July 18, 2006

Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee It doesn't look good for Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee, whose support has gone from bad to worse in the latest Rasmussen Reports election poll of Rhode Island's U.S. Senate race.

Chafee now earns just 41% of the statewide vote and trails Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse by five percentage points.

Pennsylvania Senate: Casey (D) 52% Santorum (R) 37%
June 26, 2006
The reelection campaign of Republican Senator Rick Santorum has been a rocky road so far, and the latest Rasmussen Reports election poll of the Pennsylvania race for U.S. Senate offers only minor comfort at best.

Now trailing Democrat Bob Casey by fifteen percentage points (52% to 37%), Santorum has gained a few points since last month. Of course, gaining a few points after lagging by twenty-three points is hardly an accomplishment for an incumbent to brag about.

Fox News says its a done deal:

Election Prediction: Democrats Will Take Back House
Monday, August 07, 2006
By Martin Frost
This year’s election is three months from this Tuesday, so it’s time to go out on a limb and predict the outcome in the battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

With the usual caveat that events could change the dynamic in the next three months, let me venture the following prediction: Democrats will capture a net of at least 25 seats and will control the next Congress by at least 10 seats.

Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, said his most expansive estimate classifies 52 seats as "unsafe," 40 of them Republican, 12 of them Democratic.........

If the dems take back the house will there be impeachment hearings before the end of the Bush term?

Hoops I doubt it. Not that they won't want to, but this would give the Repubs a huge platform for 2008. That will be an internal argument that the Presidential frontrunners (Hillary/Kerry) would kill on arrival.

As a neocon, I'd of course like the fight because that would rally our supporters for 2008. The more of Pelosi on TV, the better.

I don't see any point in impeachment hearings, unless they got rid of Cheney first somehow.

What I'd like to see is vigorous -- lacking a stronger word -- oversight of every move the Bushies try to make for for the next two years, as well as investigations into the more sordid dealings of the last six.

Let's start with no-bid contracts given out for projects in Iraq.

Tom, I would settle for the clean & legal removal of Bush & Cheney, by August of '07. How about you?

Hoops, I think its more likely the House would move quickly on impeachment, if...
the Dems also win the Senate back. Otherwise, a Dem controlled House would investigate.... and draw the process out into the '08 cycle. Hoping to use investigations in the '08 campaign as a vehicle to win the WH & Senate.

Sure, but it seems unlikely. If they get just 34 Senate Republicans to vote for acquittal, then they stay. And I can't imagine anything they might have done that 34 Senate Republicans wouldn't stand up and say "amen" to.

Impeachment? Waste of Time. Just like last time.
