Rep. Harris: Church-state separation 'a lie'
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/08/28/senate.harris.ap/index.html

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws."

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate also said that if Christians are not elected, politicians will "legislate sin," including abortion and gay marriage.

Harris made the comments -- which she clarified Saturday -- in the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, which interviewed political candidates and asked them about religion and their positions on issues.

Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."

Electing non-Christians a 'legislative sin'

"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said.

Her comments drew criticism, including some from fellow Republicans who called them offensive and not representative of the party.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was "disgusted" by the comments.

Harris' campaign released a statement Saturday saying she had been "speaking to a Christian audience, addressing a common misperception that people of faith should not be actively involved in government."

The comments reflected "her deep grounding in Judeo-Christian values," the statement said, adding that Harris had previously supported pro-Israel legislation and legislation recognizing the Holocaust.

Harris' opponents in the GOP primary also gave interviews to the Florida Baptist Witness but made more general statements on their faith.

Harris, 49, faced widespread criticism for her role overseeing the 2000 presidential recount as Florida's secretary of state.

State GOP leaders -- including Gov. Jeb Bush -- don't think she can win against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in November. Fundraising has lagged, frustrated campaign workers have defected in droves and the issues have been overshadowed by news of her dealings with a corrupt defense contractor who gave her $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions.

I'll be waiting for the usual MOL suspects to start a thread asking if this means all Republicans are anti-Semites.

I just hope Harris shuts up and disappears after she is ejected, cannonball-like, from politics. But I'm certainly delighted that Nelson is facing such a disgusting opponent.

A friend of my daughters works as a staffer for Nelson. He is really straight laced himself. :-) Still a better choice than Harris, although I think she is still on track to win the primary.

Another dead-end Christian Reconstructionist to whom no Republican has had the good sense or guts to say "Shut up and crawl back under your rock."

"God is the one who chooses our rulers."

Isn't it kind of blasphemous to refer to Scalia and Thomas as "God"?

She's a loon. I a were a Republican, I'd be aghast that she was in the same party as me.

If G-d chooses our elected leaders, why does she vote or campaign?

Osama Bin Laden: Church-state separation 'a lie'
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/08/28/senate.harris.ap/index.html

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Osama Bin Laden told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws."

"If you're not electing Muslems, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Bin Laden said.

His comments drew criticism, including some from fellow Muslems who called them offensive and not representative of the party.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was "disgusted" by the comments.

From Urban Dictionary:

1. Katherine Harris Crazy

(n.) As insanely optimistic as Congresswoman Katherine Harris. Usually characterized by an overly optimistic estimation of someone's chances of achieving success.

Did you hear Jim just bought 500 dollars in lottery tickets? That boy is Katherine Harris crazy if he thinks he's going to hit the jackpot.

Even among Republicans voters, 34% say they prefer Senator Nelson.

Harris's bid suffered another blow in mid-July when three top staffers resigned—the second round of such high-level departures in the campaign—and then promptly complained to the press about her management style.

Harris is viewed favorably by 40% of all voters, 58% of GOP voters. She is viewed unfavorably by 49% of all voters; 34% view her "very" unfavorably, and 53% of Democrats view her "very" unfavorably.

Senator Nelson is viewed favorably by 63% of all voters, including 55% of the GOP and 72% of Democrats.

LeRoy Collins, Jr. is a Republican? Sr. was a DEM and the chairman of the National Convention that nominated JFK in 1960.

notehead,
We agree. I wish all losing politicians would simply go away. Unfortunately that doesn't happen as often as it should. At least Dole was shown the door.

Dole was a sugar dumplin' compared to Harris. I think she may truly have some mental problems. She's nothing but dead weight for the GOP, but many of them seem to realize that. She'll just be a bad memory soon enough.

While the heinous Ms. Harris is indeed dangerously unbalanced and hardly to be entrusted with even the paltry responsibilities of a Florida Senator, she is nonetheless extremely well-spoken, and great fun at parties.

The idle rich in her home town of Sarasota will no doubt quickly welcome her back into their collective bosom with consolation fetes at The Colony, Michael's On East, and Pattigeorge's. Ho hum.

Go in peace.

Oh. My. God.

She won the primary. Easily.

I know we have some MOL'ers in Florida. Will somebody please explain how on earth this happened? Is Nelson covered with open sores or something?

She won the primary, as her three opponents were basically corpses in varying states of putrifaction.

The election will be a bit different, however. Even Guv'nah Jeb is distancing himself from her.

Nelson is a moderate Democrat. He is probably very happy that he will be facing Ms. Harris in November. "Cruella's" appeal is only to the hardcore GOP right. Prior to Ms. Harris Florida was considered a "toss up" state and Nelson's seat was in danger. He is now the odds on favorite to win his second term.

Florida Primary Showing Bodes Ill for Harris

Against three political unknowns, the onetime GOP star gets 49% of the vote in Senate bid.
By Carol J. Williams, Times Staff Writer
September 6, 2006

MIAMI — Rep. Katherine Harris, the controversial one-time Republican hero, collected less than half the party's vote Tuesday in winning her Senate primary race against three political unknowns, foreshadowing a tough November face-off with Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson.

Harris' 49% showing reflected her growing unpopularity within the party after a campaign replete with gaffes and questions about her integrity. Nelson, who had no primary challenger, leads in opinion polls by 40 percentage points and has amassed a $16-million war chest — twice the amount of Harris' contributions.

She's a non-event, though. There is no one predicting she will win. I can't imagine there is anyone outside of Florida that actually thinks she has a chance, let alone will defend her.
