!!!!!! Judge Blocks Fla. Voter Registration Law By CURT ANDERSON The Associated Press Monday, August 28, 2006; 1:29 PM MIAMI -- A federal judge on Monday declared a new Florida voter registration law unconstitutional, ruling that its stiff penalties for violations threaten free speech rights and that political parties were improperly exempted. The 48-page ruling by U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz means that state authorities cannot enforce the provisions of the law. It took effect Jan. 1 and has been blamed by several labor unions and nonprofit groups for effectively blocking voter registration drives across the state because of the financial risk. "If third-party voter registration organizations permanently cease their voter registration efforts, Florida citizens will be stripped of an important means and choice of registering to vote and of associating with one another," Seitz wrote. The law also "unconstitutionally discriminates" against third-party registration groups because it does not apply to political parties, Seitz added. more at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/28/AR2006082800502. html

The constitutionality of vote-related laws is also of little interest to fleas and slime molds. I wonder... what other similarities are there? |

Not much room for that Southerner. Jeb could take it too the Supreme Court, and get alot of bad PR, and probably lose. This sort of crap is best done quitely. Takin it to the SC would be a complete overplay. THe trick is erode rights (Voting)gradually, not in one fell swoop. Geesh, get it together, man. |

Listen, it's amply documented that those things happened all over Florida in 2000. And considering that the election was decided by like 300 votes, why do you think we're imagining things? Yes or no: do you think an election can be stolen? |

Tom- Never thought about it, but sure it is possible. Unfortunately, from now on every election will be considered "stolen" by someone. So Tom, if you think the 2000 (and 2004) election was stolen, what did you do about it? Except whine about it, it looks like NOTHING to me. Is this the "great liberal outrage" I hear so much about? Such a courageous soul. Revolt or STFU! -SLK |

slk - that is still a sad argument. you expect us to arm ourselves and march to Washington and do what exactly? Maybe we can just go commandeer an F16 or two and do what exactly? See the way we effect change in our society is by investigating, by fact finding, by speaking the truth, by protesting. All of which we are doing. If it was up to people like you the government could do or say anything and you would accept it like a sheep. |

SLK, I put my money where my mouth is, and I also call the offices of my elected officials from time to time. Meanwhile, we're here to discuss things, and that's what we're doing. Your advice to "revolt or STFU" is indicative of complete obliviousness. You seem to be very jealous of my Prius, by the way. Gas prices got you down? |

notey and crew- If "revolt or STFU" is "indicative of complete obliviousness" then what is whining about a stolen election on an internet chat board accomplish? One of the the greatest crimes against democracy would be a stolen election. I would expect the populace, especially those loyal to the losing party, to go a little apeshit over it. But nope, it is easier and more conveienent (sp) to bitch about it on a chat board. Such revolutionaries you all are.... -SLK BTW, I would start to take the lot of you more seriously if you didn't take the liberal/left wing position on EVERYTHING. Don't trust it one bit....

Chris, Jeb should be scarier. He is yet to have his eight years while his brother is on the back end. Jeb will come back to ruin another decade for you libs. 2012 if a Dem wins in '08, or 2016 if a Repub wins. tom, I feel you on the stolen election deal. I would be up in arms if I believed an election was stolen. However, for you to continually say 2000 was stolen without any proof only leads you to be dismissed. But I'll be interested in your theories come November. |
