President Bush talks to Brian Williams http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14576012/ WILLIAMS: You've been on a Teddy Roosevelt reading kick. BUSH: Well, I'm reading about the battle of New Orleans right now. I’ve got an eclectic reading list. WILLIAMS: And now Camus? BUSH: Well, that was a couple of books ago. Let me look. The key for me is to keep expectations low. *********************************************** Dumbing down… A new low of expectations from GWB? Read the rest of this interview. BIZARRE!

Bush is a freak show. His inappropriate snickering reminds me of Beavis. We all knew he keeps expectations low, but did anyone think he'd ever admit it? Weird. Worst president ever. |

Perhaps he read Camus in the original french. L'Estranger But I am sure that he didnt read deeply. He probably thinks it is about a man who shoots an Arab. |

The dumb-arse fall-back responses to questioning Bush's policies and competence are always variations of one of 2 themes: 1. "You hate Bush if you don't support what he's doing." They are incapable of accepting the possibility that their votes for Bush elected a man who is incompetent to lead a country. They are incensed that it is so evident. 2. "You hate America" if you don't support the president. It's the good, old "Love it or leave it" of the 50s and 60s. And just as dumb. Once again (but I thought we had left this behind years ago), we seem to be in the company of knee-jerk, atavistic know-nothings. We'll get through the present with them, but more's the pity for the future of this country. In the "old days," at least HUAC, the John Birch Society, and Joe McCarthy had some colorfulness about them. These new models are as interesting and insightful as Wonder Bread. |

Hmmm, I would not want to see HUAC or Fightin' Joe again, but I do miss Barry Goldwater a lot. I would love to hear what he would think about W or Cheney or Rummy. Half of it would be unprintable but hysterically funny. It is interesting to note that the libertarian wing of the conservative movement is abandoning Bush and the GOP in droves. A recent convention (including South Park's founders) shredded Bush and leaders said they would rather have a Dem congress and gridlock than allow the current GOP to plunder the country. Heard the same on a right-wing talk show on 770 the other night. To be fair, though, too many moderates and liberals also gave Kerry knee-jerk support in the spirit of "anyone but Bush". I hope that mods and libs will be as hard on a Dem president (or on Menendez, Corzine, Lautenberg) as they are on Bush and his ilk. Let's face it, while the Dems would not have got us into Iraq, they would have plundered the economy just like the GOP has done during its time in control of Congress. |

By the way, the John Birch Society is still alive and well, and still fulminating against One World Government, the Unholy Alliance of Big Government and Big Business, the Council on Foreign Relations (and the Tri-Lateral Commission), and the demise of the petite bourgeoisie (although they would never use that term). The Society is opposed to the war in Iraq, links Bush II with Bush I and Clinton and Carter as members of an elite who are part of a big government-business conspiracy to take over the world, and is pretty upset with Bush's invasion of personal rights and freedoms. All in all a very interesting stew of ideas. http://www.jbs.org/

Innisowen, It's obvious that SLK can no longer defend GWB. So he tries to reduce anyone who doesn’t support the Shrub’s views calling them “Bush haters”. I guess thats 3/4 of of the US eh? It’s getting tired and old. Even GWB’s OWN party the Repugs are abandoning him. I don’t KNOW who is MORE embarrassing these days… him or Rumsfeld. I say, send him back to TEXAS and let him be a COWBOY!

It is interesting that Goldwater went from being a reactionary SOB in the minds of many people, myself included, when he ran for President in 1964, to a rehabilitated senior stateman by the time he retired from the Senate. I wonder if he changed, or if our views of him changed? However, the really scary thing is that if EATS synopsis of the John Birch Society is correct, I think I agree with them. |

Eats: "...who are part of a big government-business conspiracy to take over the world" Well, this part is true and goes back to Nixon. Have you read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" yet? Not only is it scary, it is depressing as hell. CHeney is certainly the embodiment of it today. |

Crabby--look for "None Dare Call It Conspiracy"--a classic that JBS still sells. You will be looking for Trilateral Commission members under your bed at night after reading it. |

How far is "down the road"? There was 48 years between William Henry Harrison and his grandson Benjamin. And you weren't talking about a family member you were talking about George W. being elected to a third term. |

Bush I was discarded after one term; Bush II, unless something drastic happens, is going to look even worse. Why would they public say, "Gee we want more of this!"? Most voters don't share your devotion to these people. |
