Quote:A British television channel has been criticised as "irresponsible" for making a drama in which US President George Bush is assassinated. Death of a President uses actors and computer effects to portray the president being shot dead during an anti-war rally in Chicago in 2007 UK broadcaster Channel 4, who made the mock documentary, said it explored the effects of the War on Terror on the US.
I'm far from being a fan, but I wasn't sure what to make of something like this. Is this a question of responsibility (global/social/political) or should it just be dismissed as bad taste? |

Regardless of politics, it is tasteless, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't watch it. I read that the creators intentions were to emphasize not so much on the assassination it self but afterwards. But part of me wonders, well if this is the case, why use ANY current world leader as the target? The biggest thing that caught my eye was that the assassination took place at an anti-war rally. Talk about irony, I wonder if it was intentional (the irony)? -SLK |

very bad taste. These types of mockumentaries have no appeal for me at all. The same point could be made using ficticious characters. but this doesnt surprise me either -

Hoops- On the moral high ground now? I'll try any TV show once and judge it from the experience. You seem to judge it based on hearsay... Thanks for displaying your arrogance. You use to hide it much better...your slipping. If I stopped watching everything that can be considered tasteless there would be nothing left to watch. -SLK |

If it's freedom of speech and doesn't violate the Official Secrets Act, who cares? What would one watch instead? Survivor, Big Brother (naah, too Bush43), Antiques Road Show (naaah, too SLK 2.0) |

I think the film is in bad taste. If it was a movie with actors it would bother me less. However, it is set up as a proto-"documentary" and I believe that the actual assasination scene is a photoshopped Bush video. Themp, there are conservatives and neo-cons. They are two different things. Scarborough, and his fellow MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, are very much traditional conservatives and both express a lot of criticism of Bush and the war in Iraq.

SLK: I find that watching the Road Show is like being bitten to death by ducks. Otherwise, I am succeeding in not watching very much TV. We're at the house in Vermont for the holiday---50-55 degrees, breezy and a bit cloudy, but I don't think the rain is going to make it this far north. Am actually spending a lot of time clearing a wide path around the property for our own cross-country ski track this winter. Stay dry and cool.

"UK broadcaster Channel 4, who made the mock documentary, said it explored the effects of the War on Terror on the US." Any other readers out there really missing the word "possible" in the above quote? With it, it's merely an offensive effort to dodge blame for a reckless, pandering incitement of a show. Without it, the apologia veers toward threat. Do you think Channel 4 may have bought the show ready-made from Al Jazeerah? I mean, isn't this sort of thing more their line? They would program it well too. Tuck it in between some beheadings for an "Effects of the War of Terror" night. Now that would be entertainment! |
