That hike in taxes in 1983 was to save that Ponzi scheme of Social Security you're counting on. Tell your kids to work real, real hard. And as for deficits, they aren't at all unmanageable in their relation to the GDP. The second tax hike was in overall tax reform, and his marginal rates were still a massive reduction from the high levels of his predecessor that resulted in increased revenues. Your insinuation that Reagan is known for tax hikes didn't make it on his tombstone or the DNC website.

Your statement that the Laffer Curve equals voodoo economics shows you don't understand the principle and math isn't your strength. I double your revenues, and you spend more than I give you. Ergo -- the reason you spent more than I gave you is because I doubled your revenues. Stop hanging around tulip.

You have your candidate's statement that he will cancel domestic programs? That's soft currency no bank or economist would bet on. Why else would "democrat economists are embarrassed' be in that article?

"Voodoo economics" was George Herbert Walker Bush (number 41)'s term for Reagan's Laffer curve. Not Tulip's invention!!!

CJC--

Throbbin' Zell must have made quite an impression on you...you're all over the place. You have no idea if I'm counting on Social Security. You have a nice long list of excuses about why Reagan hiked taxes. You claim that I said Reagan is known for tax hikes, when I said the exact opposite. You denigrate my math skills when I quote the first George Bush. And you say a random newspaper article ought to carry more weight than what comes out of a candidate's mouth.

But you did manage to get in a completely unrelated shot at tulip, so I guess the post wasn't a total waste.

Zell Miller may be the most honest politician in America. He's a stern, focused Marine. You will always get a very clear and direct answer from Zell Miller. He also won't hesitate to let you know if you have angered him.

It serves the interest of the Democrats (and the media) to portray Miller to the American voter as a mean man. To whatever degree you succeed in portraying him as being mean, you discredit him. If, on the other hand, the people believe that his words stem from genuine anger they will be more willing to listen in order to understand.

It was a great night for Zell Miller.

But before you discredit him, get some facts straight. Zell didn't want to be in the Senate in the first place. He had retired from politics and was quite happy, thank you very much, to retire to his home in the North Georgia mountains, teach a bit at Young Harris College, and spend time with his wife Shirley. When Senator Paul Coverdell suddenly died Georgia's governor called on to serve out the term. It was a sense of duty, not a desire for power that sent Zell to Washington, and he was clearly distressed with what he found. This was not the Democratic Party that Zell had known for 35+ years of public service.

People ask why Zell didn't change parties. Why should he? He had already announced that he wasn't going to run for reelection. He was going to serve the interests of the people in Georgia for the remainder of the Coverdell term, then return to his North Georgia home. Zell felt that it was his vote that would count in the Senate, not his affiliation.

Compare him to Jim Jeffords, (why didn't he appear at the DNC?) or Tom Daschle (hey where's he been hiding?) Compare him to the ex-Senator from Georgia, Max the Kerry "shill" Cleeland.

Zell Miller did America a tremendous service with perhaps his most significant speach.

Yeah, but you expect fire and brimstone from a preacher. When it's a U.S. Senator, he just looks nuts. Cheney and Rudy and Arnold know to smile when you're twisting the knife. Zell was just off the charts.

I don't expect a lying no goodnik to deliver a keynote address at the DNC.

You shouldn't either because it's an insult to any Dem with any integrity.

I didn't expect one to deliver the keynote at the RNC, either, but there was ol' Zell. Sharpton was not the keynote speaker at the DNC, either...that was the brilliant and moving Barack Obama.

You shouldn't either because it's an insult to any Dem with any integrity.

I'm no Sharpton fan, but I prefer him to much of the RNC lineup. It all went rapidly downhill after McCain...

There's nothing wrong with ol' Zell. ol'Zell is a US Senator. Has anyone ever accused him of being a liar? Did you know that two of the Dems biggest mouthpeieces came out of ol'Zell's camp?

No, I'm afraid that the problem for you is that despite a few kooky things, ol'Zell spoke too much truth.

Go Devils by the way.

Has anyone ever accused him of being a liar?

I have, and he is. He rattled off that list of weapons and weapons systems when Dick Cheney, as SecDef, had recommended eliminating many of the very same weapons. He said nothing "makes this Marine madder" than people referring to American troops as occupiers when Bush and Cheney both have. If he wasn't intentionally misleading the audience and America, then he is HORRIBLY uninformed about the men he's endorsing.

And he did such a bang up job that the entire Republican party, the party who vetted his speech, if they didn't write it themselves, is running away from his rantings as fast as they can:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5897622

But why are we wasting time talking about this when we're staring down the barrel of an NHL lockout? It's gonna be a loooooong winter.

Just requested and received my Devils season ticket refund for this year. They actually make you buy playoff tickets through the Stanley Cup and apply the leftover balance to next seasons tickets. Looks like I'm out even if they settle. The good news is that if last year is anything like this year -- plenty of good seats will be available the day of.

Grrr....don't remind me. If there was any way to get to the Meadowlands other than driving, maybe they'd be able to fill those seats and bring prices down a little. I mean, $90 for lower level? Come on.

I hope we get a salary cap out of this, but I don't see how on earth it's going to happen. Both sides are dug in too deep.

>>Both sides are dug in too deep.<<

They'll probably settle in the Jan/Feb timeframe. Maybe if they shorten the season and limit the number of teams that make the playoffs we will see the same intensity every night in the regular season we see in the playoffs.

John McCain was hilarious on Jon Stewart last night. He said he didn't know what was wrong with Miller but that Kerry must have killed his dog.

It's just crazy...the whole thing is so infantile. The disrespect both sides are showing for the (shrinking) fan base is borderline suicidal. There's just something so unseemly about millionaires bickering over money.

I don't know about shortening the season...I think in the long run, the revenue loss would hurt more than it would help build interest. I think they could eliminate the redline, for one thing. And I like the increase in divisional games...those rivalries are the key to keeping the regular season interesting. If every game was as intense as Devils/Rangers or Devils/Flyers, we'd be on to something. That's the other problem with the expansion teams...they haven't had enough time to build up the bad blood.

While said about hockey, it could just as easliy fit the rest of the conversation above, and our current political climate as well.

Too true, except the part about developing rivalries. I'd say politics does that pretty well.

Also, I'm all for legalizing the two-line pass for the debates.
