Quotes by soldiers in Iraq from the Christian Science Monitor (full article link)...

http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0921/p02s02-usmi.html

"[For] 9 out of 10 of the people I talk to, it wouldn't matter who ran against Bush - they'd vote for them," said a US soldier in the southern city of Najaf, seeking out a reporter to make his views known. "People are so fed up with Iraq, and fed up with Bush."

"Nobody I know wants Bush," says an enlisted soldier in Najaf, adding, "This whole war was based on lies."

"There's no clear definition of why we came here," says Army Spc. Nathan Swink, of Quincy, Ill. "First they said they have WMD and nuclear weapons, then it was to get Saddam Hussein out of office, and then to rebuild Iraq. I want to fight for my nation and for my family, to protect the United States against enemies foreign and domestic, not to protect Iraqi civilians or deal with Sadr's militia," he said.

"We shouldn't be here," said one Marine infantryman bluntly. "There was no reason for invading this country in the first place. We just came here and [angered people] and killed a lot of innocent people," said the marine, who has seen regular combat in Ramadi. "I don't enjoy killing women and children, it's not my thing."

Thanks for posting a link to a great article. The name of the article is:

A strident minority: anti-Bush US troops in Iraq

Though military personnel lean conservative, some vocally support Kerry - or at least a strategy for swift withdrawal.

The writer went in search of enlisted military personel who did not like the President or his policies. Not too tough to find since there are obviously Democrats enlisted as well (although they are the minority by a significant number).

Interesting footnote: active members of the military who criticise the commander-in-chief or any other superior officer or any actions or policies they put forth, are guilty of insubordination, a court-martial offense that is punishable by imprisonment, demotion and loss of pay.

Democrat, Republican or Independent matters not. They are all bound to follow without question when they sign on the dotted line. Too many people have enlisted or sought commissions during peacetime for benefits and education only to find out that there really are times when they will have to go to war.

The Military is a difficult and dangerous career with only one purpose; war. Those who entered for the wrong reasons were ill-advised to do so. That said, they should remain silent until such time as they are separated and may resume their private lives.

I don't suppose the following report from the Village Voice is going to help our soldiers vote to re-elect their commander-in-chief...

"Hundreds of soldiers in a Third Brigade combat team stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, say they have been told to re-enlist or face transfer to units about to be sent to Iraq.

"Fort Carson officials told the Rocky Mountain News that a re-enlistment drive is under way but that no one was being pressured. One of the soldiers, however, gave the paper a copy of the re-enlistment form that, if signed, would tie the soldier to the unit until December 31, 2007. "They said, 'If you refuse to re-enlist with the Third Brigade, we'll send you down to the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, which is going to Iraq for a year, and you can stay with them, or we'll send you to Korea, or to Fort Riley (in Kansas), where they're going to Iraq,' " a sergeant told the Denver newspaper, adding that a recruiter told him the army would keep them "as long as they needed us."

"Another soldier confirmed the tactic, saying to the paper, "They told us if we don't re-enlist, then we'd have to be reassigned. And where we're most needed is in units that are going back to Iraq in the next couple of months. So if you think you're getting out, you're not."

I read the report in the Village Voice...the information and quotes came from the Rocky Mountain News but my subscription to that ran out.

Regardless of what paper you read it in, it is no secret that the Pentagon has frozen retirements and most discharges when the enlistment term ends.

On hardball tonight The soldiers in Iraq say that the media is not painting a realistic picture of Iraq. They were posting letters from soldiers disputing the views of the media. That things are much better than portrayed. This statement is on the heels of Bias claims with Rathergate.
We are in Iraq but not fighting an Iraq government. If you stop the fight against terrorism at any point until there is a free and democratic society in place you can kiss alot more of American civilians goodby. And then you will have to start this same battle all over again.
