What do you expect from this debate? It has taken higher prominence after the first Kerry-Bush debate. If Cheney continues to behave like Bush did, then it will really hurt his ticket. (Note that Bush started sneering and scowling like Cheney does--4 years of learning from the puppet master). If Edwards looks lost against Cheney's experience, then it will stall Kerry's momentum. The format favors Cheney (sitting at a table). Edwards is usually not as good sitting as he is moving around, he is best playing the crowd like it was a jury. Cheney has to make Edwards look like a 5-year senator with no clue. Edwards has to make Cheney look like an out-of-touch inflexible hawk with no clue. It is a toss-up which one will best succeed. I expect Edwards to quote from Cheney's own statements about why Bush the Elder did not try to topple Saddam in the Gulf War. Cheney will counter that 9/11 changed everything, and Edwards will remind Cheney that Saddam did not attack America. On domestic issues, Edwards should whip Cheney--if he doesn't, Kerry is in trouble at the next presidential debate. To quote a famous political sage, this next debate is all about the Big Mo. My prediction: Cheney keeps his cool, but he looks flat and uninspiring while Edwards holds his own and does not hurt Kerry. |

Mr. Nice vs. Mr. Nasty. I rather expect that Cheney will, other than a few put downs, ignore Edwards and repeat all the points President Bush failed to make in his debate with Senator Kerry. If Edwards manages to get under Cheney's skin (as a trial lawyer he should be good at this) and Cheney loses his temper it should be interesting. Howver, I doubt this will happen. |

"I rather expect that Cheney will, other than a few put downs, ignore Edwards and repeat all the points President Bush failed to make in his debate with Senator Kerry. " Yeah, he'll slip right by Edwards, I think. He won't debate anything, and won't take any bait. That's how he beat Lieberman. He'll go after Kerry, not Edwards. He'll cop an attitude like - "hey, I set aside a little time for this because you seemed interested in my opinions, but don't assume I care what you think." |

The Republicans have made trial lawyers into public enemy #1 because they want to protect corporate interests. If Cheney tries to frame Edwards as one of their usual lot, Edwards will remind America that trial lawyers like himself are often most folks' only defense against rapacious and corrupt corporations, for which Cheney is a magnificent symbol. If I could ask any one question, it would be, If you are for gay marriage, as you've state, and as the father of a lesbian, how can you support a President in his discrimatory legislation against gay marriage? |

I'll be watching the Yankee game. Cheney, no doubt, will do what Cheney does best -- lie through his teeth and do it in such a matter-of-fact way that he'll come off as credible. Edwards will have to be on his toes. |

JJ Good point. I would bet Edwards is being drilled in all the rejoinders and corretions that Kerry couldn't get in on Thursday. For example, on Bush and the number of troops actually trained. All these things will be brought up and keep Cheney on the defensive. I agree that Cheney is lucky to be sitting down. A fat man like him will never be elected to the White House ever again, and the table will hide his rotundity. |

Face it, whoever isn't watching the playoffs will judge this debate on appearances. No toss up there. It will be like Nixon vs JFK. |

How's this for a line in response to the trial lawyer smear? Edwards: "I would remind Mr. Cheney that if it weren't for trial lawyers, he wouldn't be Vice-President." |

If Edwards wasn't a trial lawyer, I would say that Cheney would chew him up and spit him out, but trial lawyers have mastered the art of the arguing a point, so I think Edwards will hold his own in this one. |
