My sister drives me nuts sometimes!!! I told her the good people of MOL will settle this!

If they are fans, is it acceptable for 10 year old boys to wear T shirts or sweat shirts with logos for the WNBA? The argument is "So What!women wear clothing with the logos for men's teams all the time."

Sure it is. My nephews are huge fans of women's college basketball (their mom went to U-Conn). Nothing wrong with it at all.

I don't see a problem with anyone wearing a shirt for any sports team, male or female, unless it's a Dallas Cowboys shirt.

um.. unless things have REALLY changed since my kids were in school, kids around that age can be pretty rough. If 10 year old boys choose to wear the shirts and have no negative feedback, it's all good, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the shirts end up on the bottom shelf, under the super-hero pj's they used to wear, pretty soon.

If they are WNBA fans and cool enough to wear those shirts, please send me their numbers. In a few years my 10 year-old daughter would like to date them.

Dallas Rules.

Well, most years.

OK, some years.

Yeah, you're right, not in a while.

But wait till next year.

TomR

P.s. It was always assumed to be of a good nature. Its just tough to be a Dallas fan sometimes.

For a Giants fan, Dallas is a perpetual thorn in the side.

And I can sympathize. Sometimes it's tough to be a Giants fan as well.

For the record, and to stay on topic, both of my kids like to wear Giants shirts -- and one of my kids is a girl. Neither one, however, is interested in the WNBA, but mostly because they are less aware of it.

Thanks all! Two guesses which one of us had a problem with the boys wearing WNBA shirts? My sister. She insists it's different for girls, and women, to wear team shirts for the men's teams. In her mind, boys don't wear shirts for women's teams. 'It's just not done,' according to her!

Funny these are the same two boys who enjoy watching figure skating! They enjoy all sports, even something as boring as golf! (which is like watching grass grow).

She also has this thing about them wearing stripes! When they were younger I use to buy them shirts with stripes and dress them in the shirts when she wasn't around just to annoy her. The boys even liked the shirts I bought them!!!

This time I'm not the guilty party. Another sister dumped ten bags of clothes at our house the other day. In them, my nephews found some basketball shirts they liked, so they put them on. When their mom realized the shirts were for a ***woman's*** team she made them take off the shirts. To make sure they don't try to wear them again she took them to work with her this morning to give away. Geesh, some people!

I think your sister and her sons are going to have lots bigger problems in the future than the WNBA shirts, if she does not lighten up a bit and let them be who they are, not who she wants them to be. Sorry if I sound so judgemental, but all parents wrestle with the issue of letting their kids individuate, and where it does not cause overt harm to them or others, I think it is best to teach them that they are welcome to be exactly who they are. Sometimes it ain't easy getting over your own internal voice to be able to listen to theirs--fighting with my kids to get a haircut when their hair is beyond even what I had at their age, for example--but that is the fun of being a parent.

Sorry, JTA.

But no one should ever wear WNBA merchandise. Ever. No boys or girls.

Eats
I agree with my sister needs to lighten up. I think kids should be allowed to develop their own tastes. If they want to wear shirts for women's teams they should be allowed to. By not letting them wear WNBA shirts, but saying it's okay to wear them for the Nets, it's like telling them women's sports aren't as important as men's sports. Or that men and women don't deserve to be treated as equals.

If other kids were to make fun of them, it would up to my nephews to either stick up for themselves and tell the other kids they liked the team.

It would be different if they were wearing shirts that were really offensive. My brother finally put a stop to his daughter's wearing those shirts that said 'Boys are stupid. Throw rocks at them,' or something like that after his first son was born and my youngest niece hit him with, you guessed it -a rock!

Funny you mention haircuts! My nephews usually ask to get their haircut before my sister or brother in law tell them they need one. They've been wearing their hair buzz cut style since they wear around three years old!

Aqua - LOL.

Rick- Which is odd? My sister (which I'll agree on) or the boys?

Rastro- I was surprised myself they wanted to stay and watch! I think they were amazed to see 12-21 girls, some as young as 10, skate together! It reminded me of the Rockettes! And it was on ice!

So - I didn't think of it that way! You could have a point there! I'm surprised at ten they talk about girls and who they like blah blah blah. They had a sleep over for their birthday over the summer and to hear the 8 of them talk was funny!

I have a friend with a nine year old daughter who actually says things like 'So and So is my boyfriend,' And 'So and So and I broke up.' She and my nephew 'like' each other and filrt with each other. I shake my head and tell him he's ***ten*** and I tell her she's ***nine*** that they have plenty of time. It's still cute though.

Oh, and as for my sister - she even tells her husband what HE can and can't wear!!!

Yes, what is the problem with that? Maybe his sister is on the team, or someone he knows.

Carrie I agree. But for some reason my sister is anal about it. One of my sister's daughter played basketball in school, do you think my sister would let the boys wear the shirts for her team? Nope. The brother of the above sister plays basketball, they can wear those shirts though. Geesh, it's the same school, just different teams!

Most of my nieces and nephews play at least one sport. I see nothing wrong with them wearing the shirts for each other's teams. My sister with the two playing basketball doesn't have a problem with her son wearing WNBA shirts. Heck, she doesn't have a problem with him wearing stripes either!

I find it ironic when they go to Devil's, Yankee, Net's, or Giant's games my sister doesn't have a problem with them wearing shirts for those teams. Same when they go to games in Florida when visiting my youngest sister. They haven't gone to a WNBA game, but they have watched them on TV, and they like them!

To ensure that young boys are not tortured by their classmates because of fashion decisions follow these simple rules:

Football-All NFL teams are OK but an Arena League team shirt will necessitate the child change his name to Cletus, grow a mullet, and move to the backwoods of Penn.

Baseball-All options are open except for the Red Sox, because that would be cruel.

Basketball-Please if a WNBA team is adorened, do the child a favor and give him an option to wear ANY other possible team besides the Minnesota Lynx.

Soccer-Anything goes except for any French National team apparel.

Hockey-Anything goes, even women's hockey apparel because even I am not going to pick a fight with a woman hockey player.

Finally,
Figure Skating-Unless the shirt says:"What would Jeff Gillooly do?"; all figure skating shirts should be avoided.

Hope all of this helps.

JTA

If your nephews want to wear WNBA logos, good for them!

I tell my son to watch a few of those games to LEARN basic basketball fundementals which is lacking in today's games. The ladies still have it. Proof be told from the last Olympic Games where the USA men lost against the their European counterparts who engage in the basic fundementals. I know some of the basketball camps (Seton Hall & Kevin Boyle camps)are trying to instill this with the younger players.

Thumbs-up to the WNBA!

JTA - this sounds like the same reaction some parents have when their sons take an interest in playing with dolls.... They'd be much better off letting them play with dolls if they want rather than making a mountain out of a molehill.

It's only a guess, but I bet your sister is worried about more than the boys routing for a women's basketball team.

It changed my life. And the songs are awesome.
