JTA: No way, it's a GOOD thing: 'A person having admirable characteristics, such as fortitude and firmness of purpose: “He radiates the kind of fundamental decency that has a name in Yiddish; he's a mensch”/ [Yiddish, human being, mensch, from Middle High German, human being) |

Seems to me if you really weren't concerned you wouldn't have bothered to respond in such a charming manner. |

This thread is crazy. Hey, I've got an underground stream that bubbles up under my sidewalk 24/7. I get ice there when it's not even snowing out but I always forget about it. Someone's gonna fall on their arse. |

Thanks, Joan - yes, I'm doing very much better. I still have some pain when I stand up or sit down, but once I'm either standing or sitting it isn't too bad. And I'm a bit stiff walking. But nothing like this weekend, when I couldn't stand up straight. |

CLK: I'm so glad you are feeling better. Have you tried any exercises to strengthen those back muscles so the problem is less likely to recur? |

Yoga would be a good one. The adult school has a class starting March 4. Intro to Yoga 9 to 10 Saturday morning at the high school. Been having some back issues myself, I think because I've been away from it a little too long. |

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I did the Adult School Yoga program several times, and really liked it, but ended up ditching as the last two times I signed up I didn't make it to more than a few sessions. Saturday morning is usually a very busy time for us. I have a yoga DVD that I like, and had been doing it fairly religiously for a while but switched to Pilates this fall. Again, have been doing pretty well with it - I certainly missed some mornings, but I've been trying to keep up with it. The aggravating thing is that Pilates is supposed to be really good for developing back & abdomen strength, and should make these dumb "out of the blue" back injuries less likely. I'm not going to give up on it though. As soon as I feel able, I'll get back into it. I am getting better very rapidly - this morning there is just a twinge of stiffness - so maybe the Pilates has helped in that respect. |

I was talking "back problems" with someone just this morning and she said she's had great luck with acupuncture, which was something I had thought about trying. Sounds like you're diligently working on those "core" muscles, so it's hard to imagine what's going on with the back. Maybe we're just getting old? |

Some back problems don't respond well to most forms of exercise, especially in cases where the spine has become rigid or if you have sciatica. The best form of exercise you can do for your back once you are up to it is to walk for about 30 - 60 minutes a day. Yoga comes a close second. However, if you are still in considerable pain and having trouble walking, you should begin with some simple stretches.

I'll tell you something - this thread has been an eye-opener for me on many levels. First, the good side - I've had PLs from many very, very nice people, some who I've met and others who are total strangers (other than that I know their usernames here), all offering help, synpathy, suggestions to help back pain, etc. I've been overwhelmed by how incredibly friendly, sympathetic, and sweet these strangers or near-strangers have been. But on the other side, there's something to see too. I didn't post to try to elicit help from people, though that which was offered was very moving to me. Mainly, my point was to (hopefully) get people to open up their tunnel vision about reasons that their neighbors might not do something other than just laziness or lack of concern. No question, there are lazy no-goods out there; one of these posted pretty brazenly here. But there are others who just can't, and finding a solution can be daunting. Not all of those people post on MOL or would ever dream of posting a "please help" if they were temporarily incapacitated. The plea is to cut a little slack in your judgment of others until you know for sure what is going on, and even if you feel sure recognize that you might not be right. But it has seemed to me that those who are most willing to get mad at their neighbors for not doing what they should, are also the least likely to chip in and offer help. I can't help but envisioning a group of Scrooges muttering to themselves, "are there no prisons? are there no workhouses?" It just seems a small & cramped way of thinking. But anyway. Thanks again to those who have been so kind. Again, it makes me grateful to live in a community like this, with people like you. |

We MOL volunteers are now CLK's contingency plan. That should have been clear.

Good. Those of us with tunnel vision feel better now. Nice to know CLK and other MOLers will be out shoveling their own walks as well as the walks of their neighbors, if need be. Something my neighbors and I have been doing for each other for years now. Group hug.
