No its you that has no credibility. I have asked numerous times for examples of this abundance of crime on SA/Hilton section...why do you keep avoiding this request?

Scrotis...a "heads up" on NJPHIL. He's a former resident who only pops up when he reads/hears something negative about Maplewood. He's still trying to justify to himself his decision to move away. You can ignore him.

I'd ignore Harold too. You've already figured him out. He's just interested in throwing around some "the sky is falling" stuff about SA without really being willing to engage in discussion. Let him post his nonsense in peace. Ignore him.

I'm REALLY sorry I started this thread NOW! I live in the Hilton section. I have for YEARS. I grew up on Hughes Street...WAYYYY south of Springfield Ave. Sure, there are some issues. The Jacoby area is one of them. Yes, SA has some more work to be done but I'll tell you what. I bought my house on Lexington in 1988 for 160K. It would sell for near 400K now. If the area is going in the crapper, explain that! There are a lot more than Hair and Nail salons on SA now and that is constantly improving. Regulations limiting the number of new Hair and Nail Salons will improve that further over time. There is a luxury condo being built across from the Library, a new cafe may be moving in shortly, the old Amoco site will be developed, construction on the new church has started.....there is a lot going on and the vast majority of it is real positive. Yes, I remain concerned about crime and will continue to work toward insuring that SA is safe. People like Harold complain and do nothing to help. I used to be just like that, but got a wake up call one day (thanks Vic) and got involved. That doesn't mean that I have blinders on or that I don't grumble from time to time. But I will avoid taking destructive cheap shots and am more than willing to admit when I am wrong.
njphilf's contention that the effort on SA is for naught is absurd and ought to be ignored.

JerryC..keep hope alive...
It amazes me how naive many people in this town can be. Real estate prices is nearly all NJ towns have risen dramatically in the past 15+ years. If that is your barometer, well.....
I lived in the Hilton section for 38 years and wouldn't have traded it for living anywhere else. There does come a time when "reality" sets in and one knows when it's time to go. The safety of ones family should be priority #1. If only the MPD's blotter listed half of what happens in this area. Then again, that would hurt Maplewood's image.

Reality, what a concept.

I am sorry MBJ, I have to toss a scrap or two....

njphilf-did you not move? Don't you think it is time to severe your ties with Maplewood since you left it in the dust? I find it bizarre that you left Maplewood behind but still keeping tabs on it. Regretting your decision to leave?

Can you please provide examples of crime being unreported by the MPD? You and harold have a really difficult time backing up your claims.

We'll deal with whatever crime you and harold claim there is, thank you.

There, I am done. Now don't choke on the bones....

Actually I think there is crime that is unreported in nearly ALL towns, including Madison (my beloved hometown), Millburn, Chester, you name it. Oh, yeah, and wherever PhilF now lives. Take care of your family, man. Do what you think is necessary. But move on with your life and stop trying to make others feel the way you do.

I live on the Irvington border and believe me when I tell you things have improved greatly since we first moved here 14 years ago. Crime, both petty and serious, is definitely down in my neighborhood. I know, our house was hit several times in the first half of our tenure here. Housing values have finally risen after decades of stagnation. My neighborhood, once moving toward de facto segregation is now becoming fully integrated with people of all races moving in. Go figure! And go celebrate on Springfield Ave!

So you can consider Njphilf a troll, but not one of you can commend him for taking care of his family and doing what he considers the right thing?

Great, all of our property values have risen, but all of you in this side of town have at one time or another posted here[inc. myself] because this was all you could afford, or you would be in a better side of town.

$400K? Spoke to a local realtor last week, on the other side of SA, not this side.

West-siders experts on the east-side, still ridiculous.

SLK, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Let me elaborate, I've been here for 3 yrs and have heard many people vent on the town being on a decline. I've done my research and I can tell you, there are some problems out here that based on property taxes should be corrected but nothing out of what's expected due to our close proximity to Newark & Irvington.

I also have heard JerryC's concerns and think he's sincere but unless harold has had some personal attacks on him that have made him so bitter, I don't know where he's coming from.

Forget trying to compare Bklyn to Maplewood "hoods". C'mon SLK if you lived out here all your life do you really think you have a clue on what living in a real "hood" is all about?

BTW, I lived in "Do or Die" and "never ran never will" so you know I know what a tough neighborhood REALLY is.

And Maplewood, I'm grateful and glad to be hear!

seriously Harold. Go back and read njphil's posts. They are almost all junk. Nothing in them that tries to help, or even raise awareness. All he has ever done is bitch and moan about how awful things are and how blind everyone is. Not the least bit productive. Incendiary nonsense.
He moved, good for him. He did what he felt was most important for his family and made a decision. Thats wonderful. So why come back to MOL constantly to stir the pot with nothing of merit to contribute. JerryC and others do a much better job of at least trying to maintain perspective.
And Harold, you just keep driving that east/west wedge. Alienate all the people you can. That is, by far, the best way to enlighten.

Ummm harold,

My first friend in Maplewood upon arriving is my realtor. He is currently selling 2 houses on my block, one for 399K and the other for 439k.

Another house sold on Rutgers a few months back for 380k.

Another on Lexington in 10/05 for 425k (I got to know the owners) after a bidding war starting at 380k.

Another house on Hilton being sold by the owner is for 389k.

Current housing prices in Hilton go between 350-400k. A huge jump from the 150k days, huh?

Get with the program....

harold, in previous threads, we told njphilf that he did the right thing for his family. Not that it's your job to notice or remember, but why assume we didn't?

And how do you figure it's somehow wrong to buy the best house you can afford? If not that, then what do you recommend to someone buying a house?

Ah, where to start....

Screwtums, call a realtor in the Hilton section.
Njphilf, you're right about 20% of the crimes are reported.
Luxury condos in Hilton area? LuxuryHilton...a oxymoron.
Congrats to JerryC for trying, if a town is so f'ed up it needs all of its citizens help, its beyond repair [notice most other towns do'nt have this problem].

....if you have a problem with someone dissing this town, jeez, deal with it.

there are actually condos going up on Burnett and Rutgers(?) and more soon on SA...say goodbye to Bumper to Bumper....

How one can be clueless about ones hood yet claim to know so much about it is beyond me...

You are retired right? Why don't you channel some of your energies into making things better (whatever yout think they are)instead of sitting arounding whining, bitching complaining and mumming and doing nothing....?

harold if you hate it so much move to the "BETTER side"...or away...it sounds like you have a complex....

Duncan,

Or how about Free Me? (Love That Album)

Free me
Cant you hear that's what I say
Free me
Anyhow or anyway.

I hear a voice
Call in the night
Push on the brain
Fades with the light
And I've seen a face
With so many eyes
Out in the words
Know there lies
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say.

Free me
Free me
Inside I'm bleeding can't you see
Free me
From all this pain and misery.

I am a flame
But he held the fire
Call me a fool don't call me a liar
Take me to hell
And let me stay
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say.

Free me

(I lie awake burning inside
No where to run and no where to hide
Old lady time
She's no friend to me
I feel her change
And she holds the key
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say.

Free me
Free me
Cant you hear that's what I say
Free me
Anyhow or anyway.
