Could someone verify that Maplewood is the recipient of a $50,000 grant from Essex County for new tennis courts? What a load of HORSE MANURE! What do we need tennis court money for when we already have seven that go mostly unused (in addition to a tennis club if I'm not mistaken). Why not upgrade some of our playgrounds our rebuild our baseball fields? If this is true I'd like to know who is responsible and the logic behind the decision. Of course I could probably just call someone on the town council but posting on MOL is much more gratifying.

Um, I think it is good. Because the courts do get used. And they need repair.

I wouldn't necessarily count the current utilization rates of the tennis courts as representative of the norm.

I'd love to see the lacrosse goal in Memorial park get a little spruce-up. There's all kinds of broken glass around there and the dirt needs to be leveled off a bit. Not a big project, but something maybe an extra couple thou from the tennis courts could fix.

The condition of the tennis courts in this town is abominable. I took lessons one summer and the instructor actually had to resort to painting the lines himself on one of the courts. The lines are faded, they're all cracked, with grass growing through them. The nets are sagging and they aren't cleaned regularly. They need the money to fix up what we have because they do get used, and would be used more if they were in better condition...

They did repaint the courts in Memorial next to the Rec. center; I think the nets are new, too.

Yes, you're right those did get redone last year finally. Unfortunately, none of the others did as far as I can tell (e.g., in Memorial Park or the ones on the corner of Valley and ? forget the name of that street -- but they're the ones by the paddle tennis courts.
