I didn't realize how Stern-dependant I was. Even with a now 20-minute shorter commute, the morning radio selection is horrible, ESPECIALLY David Lee Roth (and I still really miss Booker in the afternoons!). I've been listening to NPR, which I don't particularly like in the morning, but it's better than pretty much everything else (once I get my "Led" out on 104.3...). So, basically, to those of you who have had Sirius and Stern for a good 3 weeks now, is it worth it? Is the cheapo $50 receiver sufficient? I know this has been discussed at length already, but it's been a while now and I'm just trying to get a feel of if I should splurge or not.

Are they on in the morning? I was a fan when they were on afternoons here. XM also has baseball, right? That's another plus... hmmm...

If you'd like to hear some of the new Stern shows, I can arrange to send them to you. I've been downloading from the newsgroups and I have to say, I really love Howard on Sirius.

Its not the barrage of profanity that I was kind of expecting... its clever, its funny, and yes - occasionally a naughty word escapes over the airwaves. And guess what? The FCC is wrong, broadcasting a four letter word does NOT cause the world to come to a screeching halt!

Seriously, if you'd like to hear some of the shows feel free to send me a message.

Stern is recreating material? He may be redoing some songs, but he's definitely NOT simply recreating material. He's doing the same funny show he's always done, but on satellite.

Do you folks really get a laugh out of hearing this guy say "penis" and "titty" on the radio?

I respect and defend his ability to say it. The tone of the discussion turns salty, and generally gets a genuine laugh from me.

The FCC and Jack Valenti better stay out of this!

XM is old folks radio. Good Morning America? Ellen DeGeneres? Yikes... Sirius is much hipper and has Howard while XM only has the poor man's version in Opie & Anthony. Sirius also has the all Bruce Springsteen and all Elvis channels. Sirius is better for sports except baseball. They have all the others like college football NFL, NBA, NHL, NASCAR and three mobile satellites for much better reception while XM only has two that don't move. Sirius has E! Entertainment Radio, Sirius Right and Sirius Left for your political preferences, Fox News Channel, NPR Radio, C-SPAN radio, CNBC, Bloomberg News, BBC radio, Court TV, Maxim Radio.

Get Sirius

I'm gonna think about this for a while. I just need something to listen to in the morning. All that extra sports stuff doesn't really matter to me - the only sport I'm really interested in and follow is baseball, and college basketball on occasion.

Regardless of which brand, I guess what I'm really trying to figure out is if it's actually worth paying for.

you are mistaken. he has been rerecording old bits. not live on the air but for later use. it is hacky!

Sirius is great! The difference between old TV and cable.

I still like "free" radio now and then, but Sirius always has something great to listen to.

The new format on KROC is growing on me in some areas - I can't take David Lee Roth for his entire show, but he can stumble onto interesting subjects and hold my attention. I think I like him partly because he's so ADD and hyperactive the show is sort of a reality show for radio.

From 2 to 3 on KROC I am LOVING the Penn Gillette show. He's funny, smart, hyperactive, but not exhausting the way DLR is. He had the Amazing Randi on last week and it was a fine hour indeed.
I like the insider geek showbiz chatter - his sidekick talked about his life as a clown and "clown groupies" Who knew there are clown fetishests?

I think Gillette and DLR should switch time slots and the station could have a hit.

Radio Chick? So boring, so condescending, so annoying.

Luckily, since I have Sirius, that's when I switch to my 100's of stations! Yay!

I love my commute with Howard! I look forward to sitting in traffic on the Newark Bay extension. Friday's roast of Ralph was great! It's not all potty talk and when the occasional profanity does get uttered, it is not shocking in the least. I don't even care about the traffic reports any more on the way home. Howard 100 News is so much more enjoyable.

I love the news - has always been the best part of the Stern show IMO.

I think many people who don't like Howard have only heard snippets of stripper interviews which is a minor part of the show, and usually not that interesting. I like the interaction of the regulars on the show and they are really really funny.

Artie Lang - when he told the story about the pig mask when he was on MadTV - one of the funniest, saddest, grossest stories ever.

Libertarian,

Your statement made it seem like Stern's show is filled with rehashing of old bits. That's not true. He may be recreating bits off the air, but what does that have to do with the content of the show?

I have both XM and Sirus in the office and XM in my car and home. Both offer about the same things if you don’t consider the sports channels.

Pros and Cons:
Both signals are sent from Satellite and terrestrial repeaters, but

XM has 2 geosynchronous satellites that maintain position over the US, So it’s possible that in some areas the signal drops, the terrestrial repeaters are taking up the slack here.

Sirus has 3 orbiting satellites, so there are always 2 over the US at any time. Depending on where the satellites are your signal can drop (we notice it in the early morning, not bad though), the terrestrial repeaters have a little difficulty making up the signals, because the dead spots move.

Both are also streaming on the internet but not all the channels (O & A are Howard is not). Sports are also not on the internet.

Both radio units have the same features. And both look like they add channels at about the same rate. XM does have Marine Radios that feature Charts and weather.

Sirus: I like Howard, Maxim Radio, and the Music Channels
XM: O & A, Comedy 105, Discovery Channel, Old Time radio, Radio Theater.

As for the Uncensored stuff, none of the channels make it a point to curse, the just do it when the word will fit. Like when you listen to a comedian, Richard Pryer cursed, Bill Cosby didn’t. It’s not that I need to hear the word Boobies, but sometimes it just fits. When guys talk they say things like “She has an like a Thoroughbred” they don’t say “Her tush is correct” But the Radios also have Disney, just for woman, political, and music channels.

If I had to pick one, I’d go with XM, but I am interested in what Howard is going to do with the new show.

I haven't listened to every Stern show, but I did get the first few... and I agree with Brett - its not about cursing, its about speaking as adults. I don't know about you folks, but yes... there are times in my conversations where I will say something not FCC approved, and its GREAT to hear it on the radio. I can't help but feel insulted by the ridiculous 'codes' forced upon public broadcasters these days... what's next? Maybe the FCC will allow them to spell the words out but not say them?

PS - a few of you have asked about getting copies of the Stern shows - I've answered everyone that emailed, but if you haven't gotten an answer don't blame me! Its the PL system - you can shoot a note to my 'spam' email account, divemaster@optonline.net. Put a good descriptive title on the email, though, so I have a chance at seeing it.

I have both and I prefer XM. I'm mostly interested in music, and in that area XM is the clear winner (to me). The biggest thing is it sounds dramatically better than Sirius, which sounds thin and tinny. XM has rich, CD quality sound. I also prefer its channel lineup, which tends to be a little less programmed and more adventurous. But you can't go too wrong with either one. You'll never go back to terrestrial radio again.

Marvin Gardens: I love that you claim XM is "old" and unhip and then go on to laud Sirius for Springsteen, Elvis, NHL, NASCAR, Fox News Channel, NPR Radio, C-SPAN radio, CNBC, Bloomberg News, BBC radio, and Court TV. Yeah, sounds really young and hip to me.

What a load. The instant he stopped saying "penis" and "titty" on the air, you guys would quickly lose interest in the "speaking as adults" baloney.

I wish we'd had Stern when I was a seventh grader. I would have roared with mirth. Now I'm an adult.

Someone who says "titty" and "penis" on the radio is a heroic figure in the mind of a pimply-faced, teenaged boy.

Reject puerile, adolescent humor disguised as "speaking as adults" in 2006.
