It seems to me that if you're going to have a Super Bowl in the home of Motown, you ought to be asking Berry Gordy to put together a halftime show of still alive Motown stars. Pappa Was A Rolling Stone - yes Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones - no. |

You confuse the Super Bowl Halftime show with worthwhile entertainment. The Stones were quite influenced by R&B and blues in their early days, but no longer alas. They were once quite good. |

Yup, once-upon-a-time Mick could sing. My, times have changed! Anyways… Detroit is the birthplace of Motown which produced some of the most successful R&B groups of our time. Gladys Knight & The Pips, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, the Jackson's, Stevie Wonder and the Temptations, all acts that are still alive and CAN SING! Recently I saw Gladys & Smokey performing not long ago and they haven’t lost their style and voice. Unlike Jaeger, they both look GOOD for their age. Even though Stevie performed for the pre-game show, I thought that he should be part of a halftime revival of Motown acts. Suzanne DePasse, a protege and Creative Assistant to Berry Gordy when Motown started, developed and produced the Motown Specials for television (which had some of the highest ratings in tv), should have been called to produce the halftime show. Ms. De Passe won two Emmy Awards as Executive Producer of "MOTOWN 25: Yesterday, Today Forever" and "Motown Returns To The Apollo." Instead, we were tortured with the off-tuned singing of Mick. (which I tuned-out on and turn the channel).

Phenix, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments with the exception of The Temptations. I believe that all but one of the original members is deceased. My friends and I use to joke that you would go to a Temptations concert and see 5 white guys on stage. I'm not a fan of recycling classic group names with a whole new cast of characters. It's hard to have a Temptations without a Eddie Kendricks or David Ruffin. It would be like replacing McCartney and Lennon and still calling yourself The Beattles. Unfortunately these are classic groups and if a buck can be earned the names will be taken in vain. |

I guess I'm the only one who thinks the answer should be "none of the above." My choice would have been for the Michigan State marching band to play for about 10 minutes, and keep the halftime to its regular season length of 12 minutes. 90 million people tuned in to the game. If they had a marching band instead of the Stones it would have been, oh let me take a wild guess and estimate -- 90 million? but that's just me... |

Why didn't they invite Home Town Boy the "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent?

Parkbench, You are correct. The original line-up of the Temptations can never be recreated or replaced.
Since then, there have been 19 "Temptations." Otis Williams is the only living member of the original five.

I believe it's like this: 40 years ago, Super Bowl I was up for grabs by the networks- and CBS opted to stick with The Ed Sullivan Show that night, with the Rolling Stones appearing, rather than this "Super Bowl" thing. So this year being S.B. 40 (XL), they marked that choice. |

Even though the SB is watched all over the world, it is considered a very American sport. (Outside the US it's call American Football). This being said, I would have thought that promoting American music would be a no-brainer. Instead we get The Stones, Paul McCartney, U2..... |

Guys and Gals it is all marketing. Mr. and Mrs. America in Podunk, Iowa know the Stones, they may not know the Motown stars. I pride myself in being the least musical poster here on MOL, but even I could tell that the Stones ain't the Stones of my youth. How about having Michael Jackson for the half time show? |

Great line from Jagger. " We could have performed this song ( Satisfaction ) at Super Bowl One " Start me up and Satisfaction have always sucked live. Gimme Shelter with Beyonce would have worked much better. If you wanted Detroit Rockers , Bob Seger, Glen Frey and Kid Rock would have been a nice combo. |

Plus Mick Jagger has about 8 or 9 kids. Thankfully they probably go to Private School so that we the taxpayers don't have to bear the burden. |
