I was out early this morning and saw far too many cars/SUVs with huge loads of snow on top.

Remove it. It is the law. Not just good policy, or a kindness to those driving behind you. But it is the law of the state (passed after someone was killed by flying ice).

People had all day Sunday to figure out how to clean off the top of the vehicle. If they didn't do it, fine them ($200-1000 I believe)!

Well - people should clean it off & if caught not cleaning it, get a ticket like all other things against the law (like not cleaning off sidewalks, as re snow)...but many more people get killed by things other than ice flying off cars, like not giving proper right of ways, not signaling & causing accidents, cell phone use, speeding etc & there is not a one size fits all penalty or even uniform enforcement...seems like a public service announcement for education might be more in order, along with ticketing.

I started my commute with half my rear window cleared off. I went about a mile and pulled over and cleaned off the other half because I didn't want to be one of "those" people.

I was driving on the turnpike at 130 this morning and a tractor trailer went flying by with over a foot of snow on top.
Then again today coming into work this afternoon on the turnpike - suv's , vans, tractor trailers with chunks flying off.
I drive an suv and I made sure everything was cleared off before I left for work yesterday afternoon!
Where are the cops when they should be ticketing for good reasons?!!?

Doulamamma,

Nobody knows how many are killed or injured when blinded by snow blowing off of car roofs (not to mention the person killed by the falling ice sheet, which led to the law).

I didn't say that the police should not cite violations of other traffic laws. I'm simply amazed by the number who flaunt this one.

I stand by my statement. Don't buy a vehicle that you can't/won't clean before driving. I get up early or go in late to clean mine, and expect everyone else to do the same.

I rented a minivan a year ago, right before a snowstorm. I learned that I could stand on the rear wheel and hold onto the roof rack to get myself high enough to clear the snow off the roof. This will work with an SUV as well.

I park my car in the garage so no snow accumulates, thus eliminating the need to clean it!

Wish my car would fit in the garage, but the treadmill, the recycling bins and my husband's golf equipment take up all the available space.

Me, I open the door of my Montero and stand on the seat. If I hang on to the roof rack, I can clear the top. Just. Must be really nice to be tall enough to do this without the acrobatics.

This obnoxious, chronic complainer I work with came in today complaining about people who where driving 10 MPH while she was on her way to work this morning. Her view was it wasn't that bad out and if they don't feel safe enough to drive faster, they shouldn't be out on the roads. I guess she wanted to be able to go faster so she could get rid of the foot of snow that was on top of her van.

OK, Susan1014, my eyes are now open - wasn't out yesterday, but today there are still tons of folks (even driving little cars with low roofs & many speeding through school zones/not giving way at crosswalks etc) with a pile of snow...I take back what I said...
