Armed and considered deadly. Residents are advised to get inside and lock your doors. Middle School is in lockdown according to reports. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. |

See the SO thread. One of the posters has a scanner and Dave just reported that the police helicopter is now near MMS and Memorial Park. Centralize this is in the thread Librarylady started. |

This is what the latest is on this issue: Three guys tried to rob an armored car at Nero's. The three (two black males and one white w/red hair) fled after the guard shot the white male in the hip. They came into South Orange and turned down the dead-end block of Church Street where, apparently, the car was totaled. The two black males were apprehended in the brook between Church and the Gaslight Commons, they're searching for the white male. DPW is in lockdown.

OK - this really pisses me off: I just called MPD to ask if all the gunmen had been caught. Me: Hi, I know that you've gotten a lot of calls, but is it true that all 3 gunmen have been rounded up? 12 y/o answering the phone: It's still under investigation, but you can turn in to Channel 7 news. Me: Well, I thought that you might have better information than the news. 12 y/o: I can't give out any information. Me: Can you at least tell me if it's safe to be out around town? 12 y/o: I can't give out any information? Me: I just need to know if it's safe. 12 y/o: I can't give out any information. Yeah. Boy, do I feel safe. If MPD can't confirm that there are no loose gunmen out there, how am I supposed to believe ABC? Because if the news reporters have more reliable info than our own PD, I definitely want my tax money back. |

I picked up my car at Ridge Tire just as this happened. Straw...hot on the case. It was definatley spooky. Lots of cops with weapons drawn and streets blocked off. Very "Cops". Glad it is resolved. |

Greenie, I hate to disagree with you. I think the MPD response was the correct one. While I imagine they had units involved in the "chase" they aren't the lead agency (I think Livinston is) and what information they have might not be completely correct and up to date. |

You have to consider that when a fugative is loose, they may call the police station to get information. That may be why they can't answer your questions. The info on channel 7 may even be false, released to manipulate the criminals. At least that's how it is on T.V. |

More appropriate response: The investigation is still ongoing. At this time, as a precaution, we are advising residents to remain indoors. IMHO. Do you really think that referring people to the local news is an appropriate response? Dewey Wins!!!! |

Bets, you are correct. At first I thought the armored car was at a private business when it was robbed. With a bank it is a Federal offense. I Bet that a lot of Livingston and SO cops are steaming and muttering under their breath that after what was a very interesting afternoon the Fibbies come in an take over. |

Bob K- LL posted the first note about this after I called her from my cellphone to ask her to post it as I wasn't near my computer when I knew what was happening. I didn't hear about it on a scanner though, as I don't have one.

Grennie Your conversation with MPD sounds similar to the one I had a few months ago when the frat 'kidnapped'one of their Pledges. But at the time we didn't know this. All we knew was a 'kidnapping' occured. |

Your blaming MPD and SOPD for not giving information while the incident is still going on. How about not bothering them? or How about calling the police chief...or department head, the guy answering the phones is never going to give information out. or Call Town Hall. Try calling the FBI and see what response you get, if they don't just hang up on you. No offense, but this is how government works, its like when I was in the army...we had specific people who released information...People at the bottom of the food chain can loose their jobs or get in trouble for talking to outsiders regardless of the situation. |

Well, considering that it was a matter of community safety and not idle curiosity, I stand by my call to MPD. I have never (and never would) called the police when someone has posted a rumor or news of some crime in the area just because I want to know what's going on; I agree that this is a waste of resources. It just so happens that a member of my family was home and on her way to an appointment in the area that was being searched. I was mildly concerned for her safety, if you don't mind. If it were not of concern, they wouldn't have kept the kids in school, would they? In this case, there should have been a more well-thought-out statement prepared for the person answering the phone. |

Greenie, refering people to the TV news probably isn't the way to handle it either. However, the police, especially the phone operator, aren't going to give out advise is this sort of situation. |
