who almost broadsided me today at 11:55 am. Hang up your cellphone, stop at stop signs, PAY ATTENTION! You wouldn't even hang up the phone to back up out of the intersection. Seems to me that might be time to say, "Oops, gotta go, almost killed someone. Buh-bye" |

To the woman driving while talking on your handset in Millburn center. Look out! There's an ambulance behind you trying to get through the intersection! They need to pass the no handset law ASAP so these people can be pulled over and ticketed without having any other reason. Although the above example is reason enough! |

Carla, I was under the impression that law was passed and is currently in effect, and I'm one of the few idiots that wears my headset so I don't get ticketed. |

The law is in effect but I think it's the type for which you can't get pulled over. They have to pull you over for something else, and then they can cite you for talking while using your handset. Unfortunately, I don't think the headset helps enough. Talking on the headset is still distracting and impairs a driver's ability.

If you need to make or take a call while driving, pull over and stop the damn car. |

Right now the hands free law is secondary. You have to be stopped for something else. So if you are talking on the phone and driving safely they can pull you over for the busted tail light and then top it off with the phone ticket. But they cannot make the phone the primary cause for the stop. |

ME - I thought that was the law too. The way the current law works makes it ok to talk with a handset as long as you obey driving laws. Not much of a deterent. Think of the revenue the towns could bring in if they assigned one officer to pull offenders over all day. Even if they just pulled over baseball capped women in SUVs they'd make a mint. Especially in Millburn/SH. |

I speak from experience when I tell you that it's the type of Law that they can/will pull you over for. And it's not cheap. |

I still say that if it is law it should also apply to law enforcement, firefighters, EMT's, etc. Why do they get preferencial treatment and regular citizens don't? I always see police driving and talking on their cell phones sans headset. |
