I was trying to come up with a law I’ve broken lately (From the South Mountain Reservation thread). And I’m having real difficulty. I’m not going to count speeding unless it was ridiculous. And I also won’t count laws I don’t know about (i.e. Ice cream can not be sold in Newark NJ after 6 pm without a prescription).

I haven’t robbed any banks, murdered, or fenced stolen goods so I’m pretty clear on the felonies. I don’t think I’ve cheated on my taxes, nor have I been trafficking exotic animals. I always come to a complete stop, and we’re two weeks away from Parker needing a dog license.

There must be something though….

I must have jaywalked in the past, but lately everywhere I walk I’ve had Parker. So we have been sticking to sidewalks and crosswalks.

Hi Brett,
You may be anal about not breaking laws or rules or whatever, but have you ever done anything outstandingly good?

Oh don’t get me wrong mem, I have broken some laws in the past. And there have been a few doosies. But lately without a long commute everyday, and taking a little extra time playing with the dog. There aren’t any laws that I feel the need to break. And as I said in another thread, I tend to be a rule follower.

As far as outstandingly good, sure there have been a lot of things. From friendships to work, hobbies to chores, I have done a ton of good stuff.

I haven't done these, but the ones I see a lot of center around copyright violations.

E.g., illegal sharing of software; illegal sharing of music; copying of DVDs people have borrowed from Netflix; posting copyrighted stuff on the web; etc. I posted a recipe the other day that I'm not sure of - I think it's clear, but I'm not positive. Actually, a few of the avatars I've used here on MOL are probably of dubious legality. The one I'm using now is from a painting that is in the public domain - but the electronic copy of the painting may not be, so I'm not real sure about it either.

If you videotape a movie or TV program you're only supposed to keep it for 30 days, I believe. I have some that are over 10 years old. (not that I've really looked at most of them in that time.) Once I showed a copy of something I had taped off of TV to a class - which I later found out was a copyright violation.

Do you make a full and complete stop at the traffic light on Vaux Hall on the far side of 78?
You know the one that everybody considers (rightly so) more of a blinking yellow type warning?

It's the one you go through to get on to East bound 78.

I used to make the stop but I got tired of the heckling!

FWIW, I find that breaking the laws I make for myself are much more difficult to keep than any laws given us by government...

I'm sure we all have plenty of them, but the one I find the most difficulty with is to never respond to a political comment from the left attacking President Bush...

Does using a company computer for personal use count as breaking a law, or is that just firm policy?

NJ use tax: If you purchase something out of state or by mail or internet that is taxable (sales tax) in NJ, you must pay use tax on it with your NJ income tax every April. This is the unpaid sales tax. Also, if you have paid a lower sales tax for something out of state, mail, internet, the difference to bring the tax up to the 6% NJ sales tax must be paid as use tax.

Use tax? If I buy something in NYC and pay the 8.625% sales tax, does NJ refund me the 2.625% extra I paid in NYC? No, right? So, why should I pay use tax to NJ for something I bought elsewhere? The way I see it, everything evens out. Otherwise, I'll be going to hell, or worse, jail. Worst yet, jury duty.

And what kind of cockamamy law is that that you can't buy ice cream in Newark after 6pm unless you have a prescription? Geez. Lawmakers got nothing better to do.

PS I jay-walk all the time. Officer! Arrest that man!

I didn't say it was fair, but that is what use tax is.

You can't make sauerkraut or sausage in Irvington, except in a heavy industrial zone.

There is a site for antiquated laws...

An example:

More Antiquated Laws

In Norfolk, Virginia, a woman can't go out without wearing a corset. (There was a civil-service job--for men only--called a corset inspector.)

In Oblong, Illinois, it's punishable by law to make love while hunting or fishing on your wedding day.

In Oxford, Ohio, it's illegal for a woman to strip off her clothing while standing in front of a man's picture.

In hotels in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, every room is required to have twin beds. And the beds must always be a minimum of two feet apart when a couple rents a room for only one night. And it's illegal to make love on the floor between the beds!

A Tremonton, Utah law states that no woman is allowed to have sex with a man while riding in an ambulance. In addition to normal charges, the woman's name will be published in the local newspaper. The man does not receive any punishment.

if you buy in a state where the tax is 6% or higher and you paid it -you do not owe nj. if the tax is less than 6% or you did'nt pay any you technically owe it. I pay mine every year!

Up
I went into CC to buy a cable to hook my cellphone up to my computer so I wouldn't have to email myself the pictures anymore. I also needed one of those scandisk things you plug into the USB port. Well, I couldn't pay for the camera thing at the cellphone counter.

I had been talking to one of the managers while I was paying for the cellphone thing. The cashier gave me the little bag with the cable in it, then handed me the receipt. Not thinking I put the receipt and the camera thing in the bag.

The manager and I are still talking as we walk toward the door. Just as we get to the door he says "Ah [said my name) you forgot to pay for the camera cable.' Boy was I embarrassed. I know I won't live that down for a while especially after he told one of the other employees I almost shoplifted.

Luckily they know me in CC so they know I would never do anything like that!

In regards to this law:

In Oblong, Illinois, it's punishable by law to make love while hunting or fishing on your wedding day.

I don't think the men in Oblong need to fear that law. I think any man should fear his new bride if he goes hunting or fishing on his wedding day. Doubt any of them will get to make love after that anyway..LOL

I also know there is a country in Africa that denies entry to a man who's hair is long and who wears bellbottom jeans. I guess the good ole hippies were not welcome in the land of hippos.

It is illegal in New Jersey to commit murder while wearing a bulletproof vest.

Drug-free and gun-free school zones. Aren't they dumb? It is already illegal to possess drugs and guns, but if in a school zone it is twice as illegal.

Isn't it also illegal to commit murder while not wearing a bulletproof vest? So I don't get it with that law. Is it a higher offense when wearing a bulletproof vest?

Yeah, the idea is that the offense is higher in drugfree zones so the penalties are stiffer. Some believe that stiff penalties act as better deterrents. My understanding is that they generally don't. Increasing the likelihood of getting caught works better.
