Alleygater-

Must you always be political? Can you ever just engage in some harmless fun?

If I said the same thing about African Americans I would be labeled a bigot. So what does that make you?

See a shrink or get over it...

SLK, I posted that in response to your entry of debit cards in the "best invention" thread. You should read the book What Every Credit Card User Needs to Know: How to Protect Yourself and Your Money by Howard Strong. I'll loan you my copy if you like. Debit cards don't have the protections that credit cards have. Use a credit card and pay the bill in full when it arrives. I replaced my debit card with ATM-only cards.

It's hard being a pimp out here. (What an embarrassing title to have won an Oscar.) What ever became of decency?

You did not hear the news? Video killed the radio star.

It was in all the papers, 25 years ago.

I can't believe no one has mentioned automated customer service phone lines--where you hear "For questions about blah blah blah, press 1..." taking you through endless menus with no chance of speaking to a human being.

They're called VRU's (voice response unit) or IVR's (interactive voice response), and yes, they are mostly misused and abused, so I agree they should be at the top of the list. And I work at a telecom company! I probably shouldn't expose my views about VRU's, but there you are.

It was #4 on my 9:16 p.m. post.

Recognize that automated customer service is intended, in part, to discourage certain categories of customers from calling a company, wasting time, and eroding profit margins. In the age of new technology, the bean counters are always looking for high tech ways to insulate themselves from the general public (unless there's some short term revenue to be gained).

In fact, I believe some companies hire consultants who specialize in dreaming up inscrutable, computerized customer service lines that will frustrate customers, resulting in hangups.

"We'll hear from you when it makes sense for US to hear from you. Stop calling us with your silly questions and go away."

Reject automated customer service and the agoraphobic CFOs who inflict these technologies on us in 2006.

It has nothing to do with Agoraphobia, and everything to do with cost. Period. It is always cheaper to talk to a computer than a person. Is it short-sighted? Absolutely. But anything-phobic? Hardly.

And I used to think carpenter's crack was just a myth, until there were some guys working on my house, and WHAMMO, there it was.

I think those little 'Hide-A Key' boxes are a good idea except for the fact that they have a picture of a key on them!

Gee, I wonder what's in that little black magentic box hidden behind that thing over there???Hide A Key
